Pereira, Doiron Pitch Bentley to Sweep of St. Michael’s, 3-0 and 4-3

COLCHESTER, Vt. – Junior Elise Pereira (Plainville, Mass./King Philip Reg. HS) pitched a two-hit shutout and freshman Payton Doiron (Beacon Falls, Conn./St. Joseph HS) followed with a four-hitter as Bentley University swept St. Michael's College, 3-0 and 4-3, in Northeast-10 Conference softball at Doc Jacobs Field Saturday afternoon.

Bentley, with its second doubleheader sweep in four days, squared its record at 6-6, both overall and in the NE10. St. Michael's dropped to 1-5 overall and conference.

In the opener, Pereira carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning. Those hopes were dashed when junior second baseman Courtney Norton (Georgetown, Mass.) singled to second with one out. The Purple Knights picked up another hit later in the inning as well. Norton was the only St. Michael's player to reach second base in the game.

Pereira, 2-2, walked one and struck out a career-high nine.

After four scoreless innings, Bentley scored twice in the fifth. Senior shortstop Noelani Rivera (Clifton, N.J./Hawthorne Christian Academy) led off with a single, was sacrificed to second and moved to third on a single by senior third baseman Lindsey Allen (Worcester, Mass./Worcester Tech HS). Both base runners scored on a St. Michael's throwing error.

A bases-loaded walk to freshman Kylee Amato (Bergenfield, N.J./Acad. of the Holy Angels)  in the seventh provided the Falcons with an insurance run.

Rivera, graduate left fielder Stacey Korotsky (Raynham, Mass./Bridgewater-Raynham HS) and sophomore center fielder Sam Petow (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury HS) each had two hits for Bentley.

In game two, Bentley did all its scoring in the fourth inning. Amato led off with a double down the left field line and scored on a single through the left side by sophomore first baseman Jordyn Needle (Abington, Mass./Abington HS). Later in the frame, Needle scored on a bunt single by Korotsky and the Falcons added runs on a wild pitch and an attempted double steal.

St. Michael's scored twice in the seventh and had a runner on first before Doiron induced a pop-up for the final out of the game.

Now 3-1 on the season, Doiron walked two and struck out eight.

The two teams will conclude their four-game series Sunday with another doubleheader. Due to expected rain, the starting time has been moved up to 11 am.
