Saint Michael’s Slips Past Bentley 4-3 in Northeast-10 First Round

COLCHESTER, Vt. – No. 4 seed Saint Michael's won the final two singles matches to slip past the No. 5 seed Bentley Falcons 4-3 in the first round of the Northeast-10 Men's Tennis Championship on Tuesday.

Bentley won the doubles point behind wins in the No. 1 and No. 2 matches to take a 1-0 lead into the singles matches.

The No. 2 match finished first, with Bentley's Nikolai Pran (Oslo, Norway) and Gabe Horwitz (Lake Oswego, Ore. /Lake Oswego) earning a 6-3 win over Josh Weiss and Jason Boucher.

The No. 3 match was the next to finish and went St. Michael's way. Sergio Barroso and Julius van den Broek defeated Tawan Rattaseri (Bangkok, Thailand) and Diego Ramos (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) 6-3.

That left in the No. 1 match to decide the doubles point and it went to Bentley. Jordan Soifer (Stamford, Conn./Westhill) and Max Bonte (Bradenton, Fla./St. Stephens) continued to play well with a 6-4 victory over Tristian Du Plessis and Mathis Billman.

When the match shifted to singles, the Falcons took a 2-0 lead when Bonte finished off Jackson Moser in the No. 2 match, 6-2, 6-2. The Purple Knights pulled to within 2-1 when Boucher earned a point for a 6-4, 6-0 win over Horwitz in No. 3.

The match was then evened at 2-2 when Weiss clinched the No. 1 match over Soifer, 6-2, 6-3.

Bentley went back in front at 3-2 when Pran secured a 6-2, 6-3 victory in No. 4 over Barroso.

That left the No. 5 and No. 6 matches to determine the winner.

The No. 6 match finished first and went to the Purple Knights, as van den Broek defeated Bentley's Liam Marr (Franklin, Mass,/Franklin), 6-1, 6-0.

The No. 5 match between Bentley's Tawan Rattaseri and Saint Michael's Mathis Billman was left to decide it, and Billman took it 6-2, 6-3 to send them through to the next round.

Saint Michael's will play the No. 1 seed Le Moyne in the semifinals on Thursday.
