Soifer Wins Decisive Match to Give Bentley 4-3 Victory over Franklin Pierce

WALTHAM, Mass. – Senior Jordan Soifer (Stamford, Conn./Westhill) won the final singles match to give the Bentley men's tennis team a 4-3 victory over Franklin Pierce in a Northeast-10 match on Tuesday afternoon.

With the match between the Falcons and Ravens tied 3-3, the No. 1 singles match between Soifer and FPU's Joe Herin was the final match on the courts.

Herin had won the first set 6-1, but Soifer evened it with a 6-4 win in the second set. Soifer then finished it off with a 6-4 victory in the final set to give Bentley the win.

The Falcons trailed 1-0 after the Ravens won the doubles points. In the No. 2 match, Bentley's team of Gabe Horwitz (Lake Oswego, Ore.) and Nikolai Pran (Oslo, Norway) won their match, over Alejandro Ortiz and Paul McLellan, 6-0.

The first two singles matches to finish were No. 6, won by Bentley's Diego Ramos (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) 6-2, 6-4 and No. 5, won by FPU's Orlando Guerrero 6-4, 6-3. That put the Ravens in front 2-1.

Bentley then won the next two matches that finished. Pran defeated Ortiz in No. 4, by a 7-5, 6-4 score. Max Bonte (Bradenton, Fla./St. Stephens) knocked off Nkrumah Patrick in No. 2 in three sets, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.

That gave Bentley a 3-2 lead, but the match was tied when the No. 3 match finished in favor of FPU's Preston Gordon in three sets, 6-0, 6-7, 6-3.

That set up the finish between Soifer and Herin in the No. 1 match, which Soifer won to secure the victory for the Falcons.

Bentley improved to 6-5 overall and 2-2 in the NE10 with the win. Its next match is next Tuesday at home for Senior Day against St. Michael's at 3:30 PM.
