Bentley Drops a Tough One to Adelphi, 4-3

Waltham, Mass. – Bentley University and Adelphi squared off on Tuesday in a Northeast-10 men's tennis match, but it was the Panthers that came away with a hard-fought, closely contested 4-3 decision.

Four of the six singles matches went to a third set tiebreak, with each team winning two of those matches. They split the other two singles matches, but it was Adelphi winning the doubles point earlier in the match that proved to be the difference.

Bentley prevailed in the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 6 singles matches, with senior Connor Aulson (Groveland, Mass./Pentucket), freshman Max Bonte (Bradenton, Fla./Saint Stephens) and senior Mauricio Fadul (Miami, Fla.) prevailing in those matches.

Aulson outlasted Adelphi's Pietro Sole in three sets in No. 2. Aulson won the first set 6-2 and Sole took the second 6-2. Aulson then took the decisive third set, 11-9.

Bonte similarly outlasted Adelphi's Valentin Goupil-Maier in three sets in the No. 3 position. Bonte grabbed the first set 6-2 before Gpoupil-Maier sent the match to a third set with a 6-4 win in the second. But in the final set, Bonte emerged with a 10-3  win to give Bentley the point.

Bentley's other win in singles came from Fadul in No. 6 over Henrique Souza by a 6-4, 6-0 score.

The two other singles matches that went three sets were between Bentley's Daniel Weitz (Roslyn, N.Y./Roslyn) and Gabriel Balestero in No. 1, and Alexander Novins (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) and Luke Stirling in No. 4.

In the No. 1 match Weitz rallied from dropping the first set to take the second set 6-4, before Balestero took the third set 10-3.

Stirling and Novins split the first two sets 3-6, 7-6 before Stirling gave Adelphi the point by winning the third set.

Bentley is next scheduled to play again on Thursday when they host Saint Michael's.
