Zoda Earns 11th & 12th Career Golds During NE10 Championships; Bentley Takes Over 1st

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Bentley University senior Mark Zoda (Nashua, N.H./Bishop Guertin HS), a five-time conference champion in both 2019 and 2020, earned his first two gold medals of the 2022 Northeast-10 Conference Men's Swimming and Diving Championships Friday night at Southern Connecticut State University's Natatorium.

Zoda swam to victory in the 50 yard freestyle, finishing the finals 0.19 seconds in front of runner-up James Henriques (Saint Rose) with a 20.80. Earlier in the day, he broke his own school record of 20.71, set two years ago, with a 20.64 in the prelims.

Zoda also turned in an outstanding final leg in helping Bentley gain gold in the 400 medley relay, the Falcons edging Southern Connecticut by 0.51 seconds. When Zoda entered the pool, his team was trailing by 0.13 seconds. Preceding Zoda into the pool were seniors Oscar Chang (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills West HS) and Zach Papsco (Northport, N.Y./Northport HS) and junior Anthony Vizental (Concord, Calif./Clayton Valley HS).

Zoda also made a trip to the podium to pick up a silver after anchoring Bentley's 200 free relay team to a 1:23.83. Papsco led off and was followed by freshman Calvin Ye (Port Washington, N.Y/Paul D. Schreiber HS) and junior Ryan Looney (Wilton, Conn./Wilton HS). Looney also placed fifth in the 50 free with a 21.27.

Bentley's third gold of the night and fourth of the championships came from sophomore Anthony Matjucha (Randolph, N.J./Randolph HS) in the 500 freestyle. A night after swimming to first in the 1000 free, he registered a 4:42.20 to win by 2.49 seconds. Earning the bronze was junior Michael Motisi (Ellington, Conn./Ellington HS), with a 4:45.51.

In the 200 individual medley, Vizental and junior Tanner Eisenhut (Jamesville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius HS) finished third and fourth respectively. Vizental touched in 1:53.92 and Eisenhut followed in 1:55.64.

Bentley concluded day two of four in first place with a very slim lead over Southern Connecticut, 280-276.5. Le Moyne is in third, more than 100 points back of the top two.

Saturday's prelims are scheduled for 9:45 am and the finals will get underway at 5:30 pm. All the action can be seen on NE10NOW.tv.
