Bentley Drops Season Opener to No. 19 Saint Anselm, 16-10

Manchester, N.H. – Senior Kris Campbell (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) and sophomore Erik Makhatadze (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) led the Bentley offense with five points each, but No. 19 ranked Saint Anselm came away with a 16-10 victory over the Falcons on Saturday.

The Falcons were playing their season opener, while the Hawks improved to 2-0 on the season.

Campbell had two goals and three assists, and Makhatadze had three goals and two assists. Junior Ben Baldasaro (Exeter, N.H./Exeter) also recorded a hat trick for the Falcons.

The first quarter ended in a 4-4 tie. Makhatadze had two goals, Campbell had one and Baldasaro netted a man-up goal for the Falcons.

The contest was tied 6-6 at halftime after Campbell scored a man-up goal with 3:37 remaining in the 2nd quarter. That was his 2nd goal of the half.

The Falcons then jumped out to an 8-6 lead early in the 3rd quarter. Baldasaro scored one minute into the quarter, with the assist on the goal by junior Ryan Birch (Walpole, Mass./Walpole). Just 37 seconds later Makhatadze netted his 3rd goal of the afternoon to put Bentley in front by two goals.

But Saint Anselm responded with a run to take control. They scored three goals in a span of 1:28 to take a 9-8 lead at the 10:24 mark. Senior attacker Matt Ward then scored two goals just 16 seconds apart to give the Hawks an 11-8 lead.

Saint Anslem closed out the quarter with three goals in the final 1:50. Ward and sophomore midfielder Jack Andrews netted man-up goals as part of the run.

Bentley's Dominick Cioffi (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) and Baldasaro scored man-up goals in the 4th quarter.

Senior Connor Baughan (Foxborough, Mass./Portsmouth Abbey) led Bentley with five ground balls and senior defenseman Cam Egan (Waltham, Mass./Waltham) had four ground balls.

The Falcons will look to bounce back on Wednesday when they are scheduled to visit Pace.
