Bentley Alum Gensler Named to Atlantic Hockey Hall of Honor

WALTHAM, Mass. – One of the all-time greats in the history of Bentley hockey, Brett Gensler was named to the Atlantic Hockey Hall of Honor on Tuesday.

In celebration of its 20th anniversary, Atlantic Hockey has been selecting players to inaugural Hall of Honor class throughout the 2022-23 season.

Gensler suited up for Bentley from 2010-14 and finished his career as one of the most decorated players in Bentley's and Atlantic Hockey's history. He's the conference's co-leader in career points (167) and is one of only two players in Atlantic Hockey to rank in the top-10 in career points, goals and assists.

The only two-time scoring champion in league history, Gensler ranks as Bentley's career leader in each of goals (73), assists (94) and points in the program's Division I era (1999-current). Overall, he has the second most goals and points in program history, behind only head coach Ryan Soderquist. He holds the school's overall record for career assists.

"When I look back at my time at Bentley," Gensler said, "I will never forget the great moments we had on the ice as a team together, from taking our picture in the middle of Fenway Park, to beating big-time opponents in some of the most historic arenas in the country and countless hours of laughs and bonding on long bus trips together. We may not have completed our goal of winning an Atlantic Hockey championship, but there are so many great memories to sit back and remember."

"What makes being a part of the Bentley community even more special is the off-the-ice aspect of the school," he continued. "I give a lot of credit to the coaching staff for the character of the hockey players they bring in. To this day, most of my best friends are guys I played with and formed incredible relationships with along the way. Bentley gave me the opportunity to live out my dream of playing Division I hockey, but it also opened up so many avenues in my personal life with the amazing education that I received. I will always be grateful for an incredible four years at Bentley and I cannot thank Ryan Soderquist and the entire staff enough for helping me grow both on and off the ice during my time there."

As a sophomore in the 2011-12 season, Gensler earned the Walter Brown Award as the best American-born player in New England after he notched 50 points on 23 goals and 27 assists to win his first AHA scoring title. To this day, he is still the only player in Atlantic Hockey history to win the award.

As a senior, he capped his career with another AHA scoring title and a third straight first team All-Conference selection. He tallied 53 points that season, the program record in the Division I era. Among the 21 goals he scored that year was a hat trick in Bentley's 3-2 win over Holy Cross at Frozen Fenway on Dec. 28, 2013.

"Brett was a dynamic offensive player who could always be counted on to produce in big moments," Soderquist said. "His elite hockey IQ and play-making ability separated him from other players. I am forever grateful for the positive impact he left on our program."
