Bentley Earns Two Points With Shootout Win over Canisius

WALTHAM, Mass. – Bentley earned two points with a 1-0 shootout win over Canisius on Saturday night at Bentley Arena after the game ended in a 2-2 tie.

Senior Lucas Vanroboys (Thamesville, Ontario) scored in the first shootout round for the Falcons. Freshman goalie Connor Hasley (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) made saves in each of the three rounds against Canisius' skaters to secure the extra point.

The game ended tied 2-2 after 60 minutes of regulation and five minutes of 3-on-3 overtime. Hasley made a season high 42 saves.

After a scoreless first period, the Falcons scored twice in the 2nd period. The goals came from a pair of freshmen, Arlo Merritt (Halifax, Nova Scotia) and Nicholas Niemo (Middlebury, Vt.).

Merritt's goal came after an outlet pass in the defensive zone by senior captain Marcus Walter (St. Alberta/Alberta) sprung Merritt loose in the neutral zone. Merritt broke into the offensive zone with speed and unleashed a shot from the right faceoff circle that picked out the left top corner for the goal at 2:01 of the 2nd period.

The goal was Merritt's third in as many games.

The lead went to 2-0 on Niemo's 4th goal of the year at the 16:04 mark. Freshman Stephen Castagna (North Vancouver, B.C.) gained control of the puck in the neutral zone and broke into the offensive zone for a two-on-one with Niemo down the right. Castagna fed Niemo, who hesitated for a split second, then beat Canisius goalie Jacob Barczewski with a shot to the stick side for the goal.

Canisius though would rally to tie in the 3rd period with a pair of goals in the first eight-plus minutes, from Simon Gravel and Keaton Mastrodonato, to tie the game 2-2.

Hasley ended regulation with 40 saves and Barczewski 33 saves. In overtime Hasley made two stops and Barczewski one as the game ended 2-2.

Vanroboys was the first shooter to go in the shootout, and he beat Barczewski on the stick side to the near post.

Hasley then denied Gravel, Nick Bowman and Ryan Miotto in the shootout.
