Gosiewski’s Overtime Goal Gives Bentley 5-4 Win over Sacred Heart

Bridgeport, Conn. – Sophomore forward Matt Gosiewski (Wilton, Conn.) scored 25 seconds into overtime to give the Bentley University hockey team a 5-4 victory over Sacred Heart on Tuesday night.

Gosiewski won the opening faceoff of overtime and played the puck back to defenseman Drew Bavaro (Bradenton, Fla.). Bavaro set the play up behind Bentley's own net, then fed a pass to Gosiewski who skated into the neutral zone.

Gosiewski entered the offensive zone down the right wing and drove in on the Sacred Heart net, and beat goalie Josh Benson with a low wrist shot to his stick side to give Bentley the win just 25 seconds into overtime.

The goal was Gosiewski's 2nd of the night. His first goal of the game, at 3:33 of the 2nd period, was the first of three unanswered for Bentley in the period.

That run erased a 2-0 deficit that Sacred Heart held after the first period.

Senior Brendan Hamblet (Hopkinton, Mass.) scored to tie the game 2-2, off a redirect from a pass by Brendan Walkom (Pittsburgh, Pa.), at 11:39 of the 2nd period.

Less than two minutes later, the Falcons surged in front on a goal by junior Will Garin (Mound, Minn.) Gosiewski and freshman Cole Kodsi (Boca Raton, Fla.) won the puck in the left corner of the offensive zone, and Kodsi's pass to Garin led to him firing off a wrist shot to beat Benson low and to the glove side.

That gave Bentley a 3-2 lead, but before the period was over, Sacred Heart tied the game back up on a goal by senior Marc Johnstone with 1:31 remaining.

In the 3rd period, senior Luke Santerno (Smithers, B.C.) gave Bentley the lead back with his 5th goal of the season at 4:49. Jakov Novak (Windsor, Ontario) won an offensive zone faceoff and played the puck back to Bavaro on the blue line. Bavaro put a shot on net that Benson saved, but Santerno was there in front to clean up the rebound for the goal.

The Pioneers though tied the game up one more time, as junior Austin Magera netted his 3rd goal of the night at 10:46 to knot the game 4-4.

That was the final goal of regulation, and the game ended with Gosiewski's winner in OT.

Bavaro had three assists on the night, and Gosiewski also had three points with the two goals and one assist.
