Holy Cross Slips Past Bentley in Overtime, 4-3

Worcester, Mass. – Holy Cross senior Logan Ferguson scored 46 seconds into overtime on the power play to give the Crusaders a 4-3 victory over Bentley University on Wednesday night at the Hart Center.

It was the second time this season these two teams went to overtime, after the first game went to extra hockey at Bentley Arena on Dec. 1.

The game went to overtime tied 3-3 after 60 minutes wasn't enough to settle it. Junior forward Jakov Novak (Windsor, Ontario) scored two goals for Bentley, and captain Charlie Marchand (Calgary, Alberta) scored as well.

Holy Cross got the winning goal with an extra man on the ice. Sophomore defenseman Nick Hale drove in on net and dropped pass off to Ferguson, who got off a quick shot inside the right faceoff circle for the goal.

Novak scored the game's first goal at 7:41 of the 1st period to give Bentley a 1-0 lead. He snapped off a shot from the left faceoff circle after taking a pass from line mate Luke Santerno (Smithers, B.C.) to beat Crusaders goalie Erik Gordon.

Bentley took that 1-0 lead into the 1st intermission, but Holy Cross started the second period strong. They tied it 19 seconds into the period on a goal by Jake Pappalardo, then at the midpoint of the period scored twice 1:27 apart on goals by Alex Peterson and Andrew Dumaresque to jump in front 3-1.

Bentley though battled back to tie before the period was over.

Marchand fired in a shot from the point to cut the deficit to 3-2 with 7:12 left in the frame. Novak then lit the lamp for the second time with 2:10 left. Defenseman Marcus Walter (St. Albert, Alberta) fed him a pass from the blue line to below the right faceoff circle, where Novak one-time a shot past Gordon for his 3rd goal of the season.

Neither team scored in the 3rd period, and shots were even 6-6.

Bentley earned a point in the standings for going to overtime. Their next game is scheduled to be on Friday, Dec. 18 at home against American International.
