No. 14 Bentley Men Visit Saint Rose Wednesday, Seeking 9th Straight Win

After extending its home winning streak to 20, the Bentley University men's basketball team will be on the road twice for Northeast-10 Conference games this week, beginning Wednesday at The College of Saint Rose.

Game time has been moved up an hour with the scheduled start now set for 6:30 pm. As usual, it can be seen over the NE10NOW digital network (NE10NOW.tv).

Bentley, ranked No. 14 in this week's NABC Division II coaches poll, will make the trip to Albany, N.Y. with a 10-1 overall record, 5-1 conference and tied for the top spot, in the loss column, in the Northeast-10. Coach Jay Lawson's squad has won eight consecutive games, including Saturday's 86-75 victory over Franklin Pierce.

In that one, all five Falcon starters scored in doubles for the second straight game with junior guards Zach Laput (Beacon Falls, Conn./Notre Dame HS) and Aaron Latham (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury HS) putting up 20 and 18 points, respectively. Laput was eight of 11 overall and Latham made half of his 14 shots.

Saint Rose is in the bottom third of the standings with records of 7-8 overall and 1-6 NE10. The Golden Knights, 4-3 on their home court, closed out 2022 with two road losses, at St. Thomas Aquinas Dec. 19 and at Pace New Year's Eve day, the latter in OT.

Bentley's strong start to the season has the Falcons ranked number two nationally in Division II in free throw accuracy (.824), fewest fouls committed (12.2) and rebound margin (+13.9} as well 12 12th in field goal percentage (.510) and 13th in both scoring margin (+17.1) and average rebounds (42.0).

Individually, graduate transfer Matt Leritz (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis University HS) is eighth in defensive rebounds (7.9) and 14th in rebounds (9.8), graduate guard Mason Webb (Oklahoma City, Okla./Bishop McGuinness HS) is 11th in free throw percentage (.935), Laput is 14th in scoring (21.5) and graduate guard Brian Wright-Kinsey (Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooks School) tenth in assist-turnover ratio (3.6). With the exception of Leritz, who is second in both rebounding categories, all lead the Northeast-10.

Laput, the NE10 scoring leader by more than five points a game, enters the week with averages of 21.5 points and 7.2 rebounds while shooting marks of .579 overall, .435 from downtown and .861 at the line.

Leritz nets 14.1 points a game while shooting 61 percent overall and 56 percent from three. Webb is at 12.3, Latham 12.2 and Wright-Kinsey 11.2. Graduate forward Isaac Martin (Atlanta, Ga./Norcross HS) has knocked down 14 of 31 three-balls and leads the non-starters with a 5.3 average.

Webb, who has 1151 career points, will be playing his 100th career game Wednesday, is 14th in program history in career three-pointers (176).

Saint Rose, in Mike Perno's fifth season as head coach, features six-six guard/forward Shane O'Dell, who leads the team in scoring (16.3), rebounds (6.9), assists (66), steals (13) and blocks (17). He's currently second in the NE10 in scoring after being fifth last year when he produced 19.7 a game.

Next on the Golden Knight scoring list are six-six junior Eric Fleming and six-eight grad student Juran Ligonde. Fleming averages 12.8 points, Ligonde follows at 10.8 and both collect over five rebounds a game.

Saint Rose is fourth in the conference in scoring (74.5), despite shooting just .333 from deep, and is last in scoring defense (76.6).

In the all-time series, Bentley owns a 27-9 advantage after winning six of the last seven, including 83-68 in the regular season last year and 93-65 in the 2022 NE10 quarterfinals. In the latter, the Falcons shot 53 percent and rode a 22-point, nine-rebound, five assist performance from Jordan Mello-Klein to victory.

Bentley will also be on the road Saturday for a 3:30 game at American International.
