2021-22 Season Featured NE-10 & NCAA Division II East Region Championships

The 2021-22 Bentley University men's basketball season was one to remember with the Falcons earning the Northeast-10 Northeast Division title, the Northeast-10 championship and the NCAA Division II East Region championship before traveling to Evansville for the Elite Eight.

Team

  • Bentley advanced to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight for the fourth time in program history and the first time since 2010. The Falcons' season culminated with a loss to eventual national champion Northwest Missouri State, 61-43, in the national quarterfinals.
  • Bentley hosted the NCAA Division II East Regional for the first time since 2011 and captured the regional championship with victories over Felician (95-63), Pace (96-84, ot) and St. Thomas Aquinas (82-75).
  • The Falcons earned their fourth Northeast-10 Conference championship with victories over Saint Rose (93-65), Saint Anselm (81-65) and Franklin Pierce (68-62).
  • Bentley earned a berth in the Northeast-10 Conference championship tournament for the 39th time in the conference's 42-year history.
  • Bentley captured the Northeast-10 Northeast Division championship. It was the 11th regular season conference title in program history.
  • The Falcons finished the season with a 25-5 record. The 25 wins was Bentley's most since 2010 and marked the ninth 25-win season in program history.
  • Bentley was seventh in the final D2SIDA Media Poll (conducted after the NCAA Championships) and 14th in the final NABC Division II Coaches Poll (conducted prior to the NCAA Championships).
  • Bentley has an all-time winning percentage of .630 in regular season NE10 games, best in conference history.
  • Coach Jay Lawson's team achieved the program's 25th winning season in the last 26 years.
  • The Falcons have made at least one three-pointer in an NCAA Division II-record 935 consecutive games, a streak that dates back to December 1989.
  • Bentley led the conference in scoring (78.4), field goals/game (29.8), free throw percentage (.761), offensive rebounds/game (12.2), total rebounds/game (40.8), in rebound margin (7.9) and offensive efficiency (1.115).
  • Mason Webb and Pete Blust both started every game for the second straight season.
  • Bentley was 22-1 when shooting better overall than its opponents and 3-4 when the opponent shot better. The Falcons were 8-1 with a field goal percentage of least .500.
  • The Falcons were 16-1 when shooting better from three and 11-0 when making 12 or more three-pointers.
  • Bentley overcame a halftime deficit to win eight times. The Falcons were 8-4 when trailing at intermission.
  • The Falcons were 10-3 when attempting more free throws than their opponents.
  • In nine games, the opponents got to the free throw line nine times or less.
  • Bentley outrebounded the opponents  in 27 of 30 games
  • As a team, Bentley achieved a 3.16 grade point average during the year.
  • Falcons will receive a Team Academic Excellence Award from the National Association of Basketball Coaches for the eighth time in nine years.
  • Six players were named to the NABC Honors Court: Adria Amabilino Perez, Kellan Bochenek, Andrew DeSantis, Jordan Mello-Klein, Mason Webb, Danny Yardemian.

23    Jordan Mello-Klein (Gr, G, 6-1, 180, Sharon, Mass., Thayer Academy)

  • Bentley's 2021-22 Outstanding Male Senior Athlete after leading the Falcons to the Northeast-10 championship, the NCAA Division II East Regional title and a berth in the NCAA Division II Elite Eight
  • In 29 games and starts, averaged 37.7 minutes, 15.0 points, 8.4 rebounds, 5.2 assists and 2.1 steals while shooting .428 from three-point land.
  • Was the only Division II player in the country to average at least 15 points, eight rebounds and five assists.
  • Was selected as the Most Outstanding Player of both the Northeast-10 Championships and the NCAA Division II East Regional.
  • Honors also included being selected first-team NABC Division II All-East Region, first-team D2CCA All-East Region and first-team All-Northeast-10 Conference.
  • Remarkably, was eighth in Division II nationally in defensive rebounds per game. Everyone else in top 13 was at least 6-6.
  • Was also eighth in Division II in average minutes, 19th in three-point accuracy and 19th in total assists.
  • Led the Northeast-10 in minutes, defensive rebounds and steals, and was second in assists and total rebounds.
  • Scored 20+ points six times, including all three games during the Northeast-10 Championships. Season-best 26 points Nov. 28 vs. Southern Hampshire.
  • Had six double-doubles, two with assists and four with rebounds.
  • Missed a triple-double twice, by one rebound against Bridgeport Dec. 4 (21-9-13) and by one assist Mar. 12 vs. Felician in the NCAA opener (11-13-9).
  • Bentley's top scorer in eight games and leading rebounder 12 times.
  • In the NCAA  championships, produced 13.5 points, 8.3 rebounds and 4.3 assists while playing 36.9 minutes a game and shooting .526 from deep.
  • 1000th career point came Jan. 11 against New Haven.
  • Made four appearances on the Northeast-10 Weekly Honor Roll
  • Played in 100th career game Jan. 26 against Le Moyne and collected his 500th career rebound against Franklin Pierce Dec. 12
  • Career averages of 11.1 points, 6.1 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 1.4 steals in 113 games (111 starts).
  • Career totals included 1249 points, 685 rebounds, 491 assists, 159 steals, 188 three-pointers and 3806 minutes.
  • .439 career three-point percentage is fourth highest in program history.  Is also second all-time in minutes per game (33.7), fifth in total minutes (3806), fifth in defensive rebounds (647), seventh in games started (111), seventh in steals, 11th in three-pointers, 11th in assists, tied for 20th in rebounds, and 34th in points.

34    Peter Blust (Gr, F, 6-7, 210, Hinsdale, Ill., Hinsdale Central HS, New Hampton Prep)

  • Averaged 6.0 points, 5.8 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.9 blocks while playing 24.2 minutes per contest.
  • Started every game for the second consecutive season and was one of two Falcons to start all 30 games.
  • Was second in the Northeast-10 in blocks (57) and offensive rebounds (75).
  • In addition, was third in blocks per game and offensive rebounds per game (2.5), as well as 12th in total rebounds (174).
  • In the NCAA Division II statistics, was 18th in total blocks and 22nd in blocks per game.
  • His 57 blocks was the fourth most in program history and the most by a Falcon since Alexander Hall in 1993.
  • Scored in double figures four times with Bentley 4-0 in those games.
  • All came during a six-game stretch from Dec. 18-Jan. 19 in which he averaged 9.8 points with a .725 field goal percentage.
  • Only double-double and 10-rebound game of the season occurred Dec. 20 at American International.
  • Claimed at least three offensive rebounds 15 times with a high of seven Dec. 20 against American International. That included 21 in a six-game span from Feb. 22-Mar. 13.
  • Multiple blocked shots 17 times, with a high of five Jan. 6 against St. Michael's and again five days later against New Haven.
  • Had at least five "stocks" (blocks and steals) six times.
  • In 79 career games (59 starts), had 449 points, 366 rebounds, 86 blocks and a .564 field goal percentage. Career averages were 19.6 minutes, 5.7 points, 4.6 rebounds and 1.1 blocks.
  • Finished career fifth in program history in blocks. In addition, his field goal percentage was seventh in program history.

24    Colton Lawrence (Gr, G, 6-3, 200, Myerstown, Pa., ELCO HS, Hill School)

  • After not playing for nearly 1,000 days due to injury and the pandemic, returned to lead the Falcons in scoring with a 15.7 per-game average. Also averaged 4.2 rebounds and 26.5 minutes while appearing in 21 games (17 starts).
  • In the NCAA tournament, averaged 13.8 points and 5.8 rebounds.
  • Despite missing nine games due to injury, was voted to the All-Northeast-10 second team.
  • Was fourth in the Northeast-10 in three-point accuracy (.436). In addition, was seventh in the field goals per game (6.0), ninth in three-pointers per game (12.5), and tied for 12th in three-point attempts per game (5.6).
  • In his first game since February 2019, scored 17 points in a 96-59 win over USciences Nov. 12.
  • 4 20-point games included 34 at Saint Anselm Nov. 17 and 32 against Southern New Hampshire Feb. 12.
  • Had a career-best seven three-pointers in the SNHU game.
  • Had a 19-point, 10-rebound double-double against New Haven Jan. 11 after missing the previous eight games due to injury.
  • Was recognized as the Northeast-10 Player of the Week three times (Nov. 15, 22, Feb. 14).
  • Finished Bentley career with averages of 11.7 points and 4.6 rebounds
  • Career totals of 856 points and 339 rebounds in 73 games (52 starts).
  • Will continue career at Division I UMBC next season.

32    Adria Amabilino Perez (Gr, F, 6-8, 215, Barcelona, Spain, Bilborough College, Hotchkiss School)

  • Appeared in 22 games off the bench and averaged 5.6 points, 3.5 rebounds and 12.3 minutes.
  • Had a .573 field goal percentage.
  • In the NCAA East Regional, averaged 7.3 points, grabbed 3.7 rebounds a game and made 9 of 13 field goals.
  • Despite breaking his hand during the game, scored a career-high 19 points on 9-12 shooting Dec. 1 vs. Assumption.
  • Also had 14 points Nov. 28 against Southern New Hampshire and a pair of 11-point games, both coming during the Northeast-10 Championships.
  • Multiple blocked shots eight times.
  • Career-high 13 rebounds Nov. 23 at Stonehill.
  • In 63 career games, all off the bench, averaged 4.4 points and 3.1 rebounds with a .518 field goal percentage. Totals included 277 points and 193 rebounds.

21  Mason Webb (Sr, G, 6-4, 195, Oklahoma City, Okla., Bishop McGuiness HS,  New Hampton School)

  • Averaged 14.8 points while shooting .475 overall, .396 from three and .889 at the foul line.
  • Also gave the Falcons 5.0 rebounds and 2.3 assists while playing 34.2 minutes a game.
  • Was one of two Falcons to start all 30 games.
  • Finished the season with 59 consecutive starts.
  • In the NCAA East Regional, scored 18.3 points a game and shot a sizzling 13 of 21 (.619) from three-point territory.
  • That included a school record-tying 8 3-pointers in a first-round win over Felician.
  • Shot .529 overall and .474 from three while scoring a team-best 16.9 ppg in 19 Dana Center games.
  • Bentley was 6-1 when he scored at least 20 points.
  • Scored a season-high 25 points Dec. 1 against Assumption and again in the Felician NCAA game.
  • Hit a 24-footer at the overtime buzzer to give Bentley a 91-90 win at Post Dec. 18.
  • Multiple 3-pointers in 11 straight games from Nov. 23-Jan. 15.
  • Bentley was 10-0 when he buried at least three from deep.
  • Posted double-doubles against St. Michael's Jan. 5 (23 points, 11 rebounds) and Southern New Hampshire Feb. 23 (15 points, 11 rebounds).
  • Became Bentley's 1,000th career scorer March 15 in the NCAA East Reginal final against St. Thomas Aquinas.
  • Was named to the All-Tournament Team following the NCAA East Regional.
  • Made three appearances on the NE10 Weekly Honor Roll (Dec. 13, Jan. 10, 17).
  • In the Northeast-10 rankings, tied for first in games played and started, was fourth in minutes (1027) and seventh in points (443), field goals made (160), field goal attempts (337) and three-pointers (67).
  • Had a streak of 28 consecutive free throws, dating back to the 2019-20 season, before missing Dec. 1 against Assumption.
  • Had a streak of 22 consecutive games with a three-pointer, dating back to the 2019-20 season, halted Nov. 17 at Saint Anselm.
  • Finished season with a .905 career free throw percentage, best in program history with at least 100 made.
  • Career totals in 88 games (59 starts) include 1016 points, 352 rebounds, 156 assists and 156 three-pointers.
  • Career averages are 11.5 points and 4.0 rebounds.
  • Plans to return next season as a graduate student.

3       Brian Wright Kinsey (Sr, G, 6-4, 200, Brooklyn, N.Y., Brooks School)

  • Averaged 8.7 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.1 assists while playing about 24 minutes a game.
  • Split his time between starting (13 times) and coming off the bench (14 games).
  • Averaged 9.3 points and 4.8 rebounds as a starter, and 8.1 points and 4.1 rebounds off the bench.
  • Made 55.6 percent of his two-point field goal attempts.
  • Was third on the team in offensive rebounds (41), blocks (19) and steals (20).
  • In conference play, shot .504 overall, including .642 inside the arc.
  • Road scoring average (9.9) was nearly two points better than his home mark (8.1).
  • Scored in doubles ten times with Bentley 8-2 in those contests.
  • Season-high 17 points at Southern Connecticut Feb. 8 in an 87-68 win.
  • Eight rebounds against Franklin Pierce in the Northeast-10 championship game matched his season-high, set Dec. 18 at Post.
  • Against Le Moyne Jan. 26, blocked five shots and came up with three steals.
  • 500th career point was scored Feb. 22 against Saint Anselm.
  • In 79 career games (42 starts), has 557 points and 261 rebounds, along with a .449 field goal percentage.
  • Career norms are 7.1 points, 3.3 rebounds and 20.0 minutes.
  • Plans to return next season as a graduate student.

20    Zach Laput (So, G, 6-4, 200, Beacon Falls, Conn., Notre Dame HS)

  • After having his freshman year cancelled by the pandemic, had an outstanding debut season that saw him start the final 27 games.
  • Averaged 14.8 points, 6.8 rebounds and 2.2 assists  while appearing in every game.
  • Led Bentley in total points with his 444 the most of any Northeast-10 player who wasn't selected for All-Conference honors.
  • Was third on the team in scoring average as well as second in rebounding and first in free throws made and attempted (105-121).
  • Earned Northeast-10 All-Rookie honors.
  • Was number one in the NE10 in three-point accuracy, second in free throws, fourth in free throws per game (3.5), tied for fourth in free throw attempts, fifth in free throw percentage, fifth in defensive rebounds (158), sixth in points, seventh in free theow attempts per game (4.0), eighth in total rebounds (204), ninth in field goal percentage and 10th in rebound average.
  • Ranked 32nd in Division II free throw percentage (.868).
  • Was voted to the NCAA Division II East Regional All-Tournament Team after averaging 20.3 points, 7.0 rebounds and 4.3 assists for the regional champions.
  • Three-time Northeast-10 Rookie of the Week (Dec. 7, 21, Feb. 7) who was also named to the NE10 Weekly Honor Roll twice (Jan. 31, Feb. 28).
  • Scored 20+ points seven times with a high of 26, along with 12 rebounds, in the NCAA regional semifinals against Pace Mar. 13.
  • In that game, buried a career-high five three-pointers, in eight attempts, and was 7-of-8 at the line.
  • Regular season best of 25 points also came against the Setters, on Jan. 15.
  • Reached double-figures in rebounds six times and had five double-doubles, including 21 and 15 against Franklin Pierce Dec. 12.

22    Kellan Bochenek (Jr, G, 6-4, 195, Kettering, Ohio, Fairmont HS

  • Played in 14 games off the bench and averaged 1.9 points, 1.7 rebounds and 10.1 minutes.
  • His career scoring high of nine points came in the season-opener, Nov. 12 vs. USciences.
  • Also had five points against Saint Rose in a NCAA East Regional first-round game.
  • Career totals in 41 games include 60 points, 51 rebounds and 23 assists.

30    Isaac Martin (Jr, G, 6-5, 195, Peachtree Corner, Ga., Norcross HS)

  • Averaged 3.9 points, 1.8 rebounds and 13.0 minutes in 29 games for the Falcons.
  • Started the first three games of January, and in that role, averaged 9.3 points and 3.3 rebounds.
  • Scored in doubles five times with a high of 19 off the bench Dec. 4 in a 111-72 win over Bridgeport. Made 8 of 13 from the field with a trio of three-pointers.
  • 16 points and a career-best 6 rebounds against St. Michael's Jan. 5 in his first career start.
  • Career totals include 198 points, 91 rebounds, 28 assists and 42 three-pointers in 53 games.
  • Career averages of 3.7 points, 1.7 rebounds and 11.6 minutes.

12    Aaron Latham (So, G, 6-0, 160, Glastonbury, Conn., Glastonbury HS)

  • In his season of collegiate game action, appeared in 21 games for the Falcons.
  • Averaged 2.5 points, 0.9 rebounds, 0.7 assists and 7.6 minutes.
  • With Mello-Klein sidelined, made his first career start Dec. 4 against Bridgeport and established career bests with 18 points and 7 rebounds in a 111-72 win. Made 6 of 13 shots including 3 of 6 from downtown.
  • Followed that effort with 10 points and three assists against Southern New Hampshire Dec. 7.
  • Delivered four assists in a 95-63 win over Felician Mar. 12 in the first round of the NCAA Division II East Regional.

25    Ivan Misic (So, F, 6-6, 205, Toronto, Ont., Cape Fear Academy (N.C.))

  • In his first collegiate action, appeared in 14 games off the bench.
  • Averaged 2.2 points, 1.3 rebounds and 5.7 minutes while shooting .375 overall and from three.
  • Was perfect on his four attempts from the foul line.
  • Played nine or more minutes four times from Dec. 7-Jan. 5 when Amabilino Perez was sidelined
  • Scored eight points against Post Dec. 18 and seven against Franklin Pierce six days earlier.

5       Jaden Baker (Fr, G, 6-1, 180, Parsonsburg, Md., Wicomico HS, Christchurch School)

  • Saw action in nine games as a freshman.
  • In just under 40 minutes, totaled 10 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists.
  • Played 11:59 against Bridgeport Dec. 4, with two points and two rebounds, and 9:32 against Felician Mar. 12, with two assists and two rebounds.
  • Career-high four points against Saint Anselm Feb. 22.

31   Andrew DeSantis (Sr, G-F, 6-4, 200, Garden City, N.Y., Garden City HS)

  • As a senior, appeared in six games and averaged 2.0 points, 1.0 rebounds and 2.8 rebounds.
  • Made five of six field goal attempts, including one three-pointer.
  • Against Bridgeport on Dec. 4, established career bests for points (6), rebounds (3) and assists (2).
  • Played in 12 career games as a Falcon and totaled 12 points and 10 rebounds.

4       Danny Yardemian (Jr, G, 5-9, 165, Belmont, Mass., Belmont HS)

  • Appeared in four games off the bench, playing a total of 18:20.
  • Totaled five points, four assists and two rebounds.
  • Career-best three points Mar. 12 against Felician in the first round of the NCAA Division II East Regional.
  • Career totals of 44 minutes, 10 points, 7 assists and 5 rebounds in 13 games off the bench.

15    Luke Strole (Fr, G, 6-5, 195, Wethersfield, Conn., East Catholic HS)

  • Appeared in two games, playing a total of 3:49 without scoring.
  • Made his collegiate debut Nov. 12 against USciences.

33    Jusouf Rashad (Jr, F, 6-7, 190, Dubai, United Arab Emirates, American School of Dubai, Marianapolis Prep)

  • Only action of the season came Dec. 4 against Bridgeport.
  • In 5:07 against the Purple Knights, had one rebound.
  • Has been in three career games as a Falcon.
