Quartet of Seniors Named as Bentley Field Hockey Captains

WALTHAM, Mass. – Emily Crowell (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee HS), Abigail Hewes (Denmark, Maine/Fryeburg Acad.), Annie O'Brien (Acton/Acton-Boxborough Reg. HS) and Britney Pearson (Nashua, N.H./Bishop Guertin HS), a quartet of seniors, will serve as captains of the 2023 Bentley University field hockey team, head coach Jessica Spencer announced.

"The team has selected four outstanding student-athletes to represent Bentley field hockey," said Spencer. "Each of them has given so much to our program already and I can't wait to see where they lead our team this fall."

Crowell was a third-team All-Northeast-10 selection last year when she played just about every minute for the Falcons and was on both the offensive and defensive penalty corner units. A starter in every game the last two seasons, the defender had a goal and two assists last season.

"Emily has been a steady presence in the backfield since her arrival," said Spencer. "She has the ability to start the offense as well."

Hewes, a midfielder, started all 19 games as a junior after being used off the bench as a sophomore. Her only career goal came in September 2021 against St. Michael's.

"Abigail has been in the center of the field since her arrival because she is a two-way player who makes great decisions with and without the ball," praised Spencer.

O'Brien started 16 games as a defender last season and played in all 19 contests. She was credited with two defensive saves.

"Annie works very hard and is a fearless defender;" said her coach.  "Her vocal presence and tackling ability make her a special player."

Pearson, a standout in the classroom, saw action in 14 games off the bench last season and scored her first career goal in the season-opener at Millersville University.

"Britney has a very high field hockey IQ," commented Spencer. "Her communication in the midfield and low turnover rate makes her an impact player."

Bentley, 21-10 in conference play over the last two seasons, opens Spencer's 16th season on September 3 against Millersville.
