WALTHAM, Mass. – Junior Katie Thies (Liverpool, N.Y./Cicero North Syracuse HS) and sophomore Lida Coco (Litchfield, Conn./Canterbury School) each scored in the second quarter to help Bentley University to a 2-1 win over Southern New Hampshire University in non-conference field hockey Saturday afternoon at home.
Bentley, ranked ninth in the latest NFHCA Division II coaches poll, improved to 2-3 overall while the Penmen dropped to 1-3.
After a scoreless opening stanza, Thies netted her conference-best fourth goal of the season 98 seconds into the second period. She handled a centering pass from senior Madison Halas (Danbury, Conn./Immaculate HS) and sent it into the cage.
Just before intermission, Coco made it a 2-0 game with her second of the year assisted by senior Emily Crowell (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee HS).
The shutout bid by junior goalie Mia Trottie (Cinnaminson, N.J./Bishop Eustace HS) ended when SNHU was successful on a penalty stroke with 12:42 left. It was the second goal of the season for junior Emma Thibodeau (Danvers).
Trottie was credited with three saves and was helped out by fourth-quarter defensive saves from Crowell and junior Amy Pasquale (Dix Hills, N.Y./Commack HS).
Bentley had a 15-11 shot advantage and was awarded eight of the game's ten penalty corners.
The Falcons will be back at home next Saturday when they'll open the Northeast-10 Conference portion of the schedule against Mercy College. That will also be Bentley's Senior Day.
