WALTHAM, Mass. – The Bentley University Falcons put up a valiant fight against Assumption University, the fourth-ranked team in Division II, but came up just short in the end, falling 3-2 in overtime in Northeast-10 Conference field hockey Wednesday evening at Brian Kelly Stadium.
After Bentley forged a tie with 49 seconds left in regulation, Assumption netted the game-winner with only nine seconds remaining in the first extra session. Off the Hounds' 17th penalty corner, senior Jenna Graf (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) scored on a hard drive from the top of the circle.
The Falcons' equalizer was scored by senior captain Christine Murray (Walpole/Walpole HS) on a breakaway, following a lead pass from freshman Lida Coco (Litchfield, Conn./Canterbury School).
That came less than four minutes after Assumption senior Deidre Burchill (Braintree) gave the Hounds a 2-1 advantage.
Following a scoreless first half, each team got on the scoreboard in the third quarter. Junior Ava Bevilacqua (Dedham/Notre Dame Acad.) scored her third of the season with 11:07 left, with grad student and captain Sam Simione (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire HS) providing the assist. Assumption (5-1, 3-0 NE10) drew even just over six minutes later with senior Isabel Primack (Ipswich) scoring unassisted.
Bentley freshman goalkeeper Mia Trottie (Cinnaminson, N.J./Bishop Eustace HS) had a busy night, making 14 saves. The visitors were outshot 30-8 and finished with a 17-5 advantage on penalty strokes. Simione helped keep the ball out of the cage with two defensive saves.
Bentley, 3-3 overall and 2-1 NE10, will be home twice this weekend. The Falcons will host St. Thomas Aquinas Saturday at noon and St. Michael's Sunday at 1 pm.
