Saint Anselm Uses 17-Hit Attack to Defeat Bentley, 13-7

WALTHAM, Mass. -- Sophomore designated hitter Nolan Elmore (Brentwood, N.H.) homered twice and his teammates combined for seven doubles as Saint Anselm College downed Bentley University, 13-7, in Northeast-10 Conference baseball Friday afternoon at DeFelice Field.

Bentley, which was playing its home opener, saw junior third baseman Eddy Beauregard (Paxton/Wachusett Reg. HS) score three times and junior right fielder Tim Zupkus (Middlebury, Conn./Holy Cross HS) record three RBI.

Saint Anselm (9-14, 2-3 NE10) doubled five times in the first three innings, including two from senior shortstop Matt Collins (Beverly), to take a 3-0 lead.

Bentley, down 4-0, cut the deficit in half with two runs in the fourth inning with both senior left fielder Liam Sears (Hopkinton/Hopkinton HS) and Beauregard scoring on ground ball outs.

The Falcons (5-15, 0-5 NE10) made it a one-run game, 4-3, in the sixth on an RBI single through the left side by Zupkus.

Saint Anselm broke the game open by scoring five in the seventh and four in the eighth. Elmore was a factor in both, with a two-run homer in the seventh and a three-run shot in the following inning.

Bentley cut the margin by scoring twice in the eighth and two more in the ninth, but the 13-3 deficit midway through the seventh was too much to overcome.

The Falcons' nine hits included three by senior catcher Charlie Auditore (Walpole/Walpole HS) and two apiece for Beauregard and Zupkus.

For Saint Anselm, Elmore finished with five RBI and three runs scored. Collins also had a big game, with four hits and four RBI.

Freshman right-hander Adam Betty (Lowell) earned the win with seven innings of seven-hit pitching. He walked one and struck out four for the Hawks.

The four-game weekend series resumes Saturday with a doubleheader starting at noon.
