Bentley Rallies for 5-Set Victory to Remain Unbeaten in Northeast-10

WALTHAM, Mass. – Senior Lauren Van Buren (Massapequa Park, N.Y./ Massapequa HS) had a 16-kill, 15-dig double-double and freshman Caitlin Corcoran (Trappe, Pa./Perkiomen Valley HS) recorded four kills in the final set as Bentley University stayed unbeaten in the Northeast-10 Conference with a 3-2 win over Saint Anselm College in women's college volleyball action Tuesday evening at the Dana Center.

The back-and-forth 19-25, 25-13, 17-25, 25-17, 15-13 victory, Bentley's fourth straight, lifted coach Joey Pacis' club to 4-0 in conference action. Meanwhile, the Hawks dropped to 14-2 overall and 5-1 NE-10 after having their nine-match winning streak come to an end.

Down 2-1 in the match, Bentley saw Saint Anselm score the first three points of the fourth and was still trailing 17-15 late. However, the Falcons, sparked by Van Buren, came alive at that point and ran off the final ten points of the set to win it going away.

Van Buren hit .600 in the set with nine kills and no errors in 15 swings. Five of those came during the run before a pair of Hawk attack errors accounted for points 24 and 25.

Bentley also had to come from behind in the fifth after facing deficits of 3-1, 7-5 and 10-9. A kill by junior Shannon Kelly (Hyde Park, N.Y./Franklin D. Roosevelt HS) evened the score at 10 and began a 5-0 Falcon spurt that made it 14-10. Corcoran put down a couple kills during that burst and Van Buren also had one.

After three straight Hawk points cut the difference to one, Corcoran provided the match-clinching kill as Bentley kept its all-time record against Saint Anselm perfect (30-0).

The back-and-forth started in the night's opening set. Bentley leaped out to an 11-2 lead and was still in front 17-9 before the visitors ran off ten straight to begin a set-ending 16-2 run. The Falcons were never threatened in the second set but couldn't maintain the momentum in the third. That one was tied at 14 before the Hawks regained the lead in the match with an 11-3 run.

In addition to the 16 kills from Van Buren, Bentley received 11 from freshman Rachel Bruno (San Diego, Calif./Frances Parker HS) and nine, in the first three sets, from classmate Dani Milner (Plano, Texas/Greenhill School). Kelly served four aces, junior Celia Cristofoli (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson HS) made 21 digs and both Van Buren (.308 hitting) and Bruno had three blocks.

Senior setter Allie Rotkin (Cumming, Ga./Milton HS) had 42 assists for the Falcons, helping her team outhit the Hawks, .181-.148.

Junior Katy Teets (Dix Hills, N.Y.) led Saint Anselm with 11 kills and five aces. The Hawks also received nine block assists from freshman Madison Sollows (West Barnstable).

Bentley, 6-11 overall, will continue its five-match home stand this weekend with Bridgeport visiting Friday night and Southern Connecticut State on Saturday.
