Bentley Outlasts New Haven in 5; Double-Doubles for Rotkin & Buscher

WALTHAM, Mass. – Junior setter Allie Rotkin (Cumming, Ga./Milton HS) completed a career night with a match-ending block as Bentley University got by the University of New Haven in five sets in Northeast-10 Conference women's volleyball Friday evening at the Dana Center.

Rotkin, making her second straight start, posted her first career double-double as she finished with 49 assists, 12 digs, four kills and the final block. Senior outside hitter Jaci Buscher (Lakewood, Colo./Rocky Mountain HS) also put up a double-double, her eighth of the year, with 18 kills, 17 digs, four aces and two blocks.

The 25-16, 22-25, 25-23, 18-25, 15-13 victory boosted the Falcons to 17-8 overall and 10-3 in the NE-10. New Haven, seventh in this week's NCAA Division II East Region rankings (one spot above the Falcons), fell to 14-13 overall and 6-6 conference.

In the decisive fifth set, Bentley used two kills by junior Lauren Van Buren (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa HS) to open a 10-6 lead.

Later in the set, New Haven, facing match point and a four-point deficit, ran off the next three points to close within one at 14-13 before Rotkin put the game away with Bentley's ninth block of the night.

A pivotal spot in the match came at the end of the third with the two clubs having split the first two sets. After a Falcon attack error allowed the Chargers to draw even at 23-all (the eighth tie of the set), Buscher put down back-to-back kills to give Bentley a 2-1 lead in the match.

Bentley reached the century mark in digs for the first time this season, finishing with exactly 100. Five different players were in double figures with senior libero Jessica Segal (West Harrison, N.Y./ Harrison HS) showing the way with 29. Sophomore Shannon Kelly (Hyde Park, N.Y./Franklin D. Roosevelt HS) matched Buscher's 18 and classmate Celia Cristofoli (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson HS) added 14.

Service aces were also big for Bentley with five different players combining for 13. That was five more than the Chargers were able to register.

New Haven freshman setter Kristine Rios (Miami, Fla.) had a solid night with 47 assists, 18 digs, five kills and two blocks.

Bentley's final home game of the regular season is Sunday morning at 11 am against Dowling College, one of the East's top programs.
