Latimer Sparks Bentley to 5-Set Victory over Pace

WALTHAM, Mass. – Junior Ashley Latimer (Croton on Hudson, N.Y./Croton Harmon HS) had four of her career-best 15 kills in the fifth set, including one to break a 13-all tie, as Bentley University outlasted Pace University in Northeast-10 Conference women's volleyball Saturday afternoon at the Dana Center.

Scores of the Falcons' first five-setter of the season were 19-25, 25-23, 25-16, 16-25, 15-13.

In the fifth set, both teams had a three-point lead (Pace 3-0, Bentley 8-5) before a Falcon attack error put the visiting Setters on top 13-12.

After a Falcon timeout, Bentley senior Stephanie Metzger (Georgetown, Texas/Liberty Hill HS) evened the set at 13 apiece with her ninth kill of the match. Latimer's kill put the Falcons up one and the match ended on a Pace ball handling error.

The final four points of the second set were pivotal after Pace took the first and held a 23-21 advantage in the second. Consecutive kills by sophomore Shannon Kelly (Hyde Park, N.Y./Franklin D. Roosevelt HS) and Latimer evened it at 23, a Setter attack error put the Falcons back in front and an ace from senior libero Jessica Segal (West Harrison, N.Y./Harrison HS) evened the match at one apiece.

Bentley opened up the third set with an 11-3 burst that made it 17-9 and wasn't challenged the rest of that one. The fourth was a different story, however, as Pace got off to a 13-1 lead and remained firmly in front.

Kelly put up a 17-kill, 15-dig double-double for the Falcons, and senior Jaci Buscher (Lakewood, Colo./Green Mountain HS) also had a double-double (11 kills, 10 digs). Sefal finished with 25 digs and freshman setter Krista Campbell (Newtown, Pa./Council Rocks North HS) provided 44 assists and two aces. Metzger led Bentley in blocks with five.

For Pace (10-15, 2-5 NE-10), freshman Kathleen Benson (Kings Park, N.Y.) had 17 kills and senior libero Rebecca Italiano (Lynbrook, N.Y.) made 38 digs.

Bentley returns to action Friday night at Saint Rose.
