Streak Ends but Bentley Stays Perfect in Region

WALTHAM, Mass.  – After having its five-match winning streak snapped earlier in the day in a five-setter with the University of Montevallo, the Bentley University women's volleyball team bounced back with a 3-0 win over Georgian Court University in non-conference play at the Dana Center Saturday afternoon.

Bentley, 6-5 overall, improved to 5-0 in East Region competition with the 25-21, 25-17, 25-18 victory over the Lions. Montevallo, from Alabama, pulled out the back-and-forth 25-17, 20-25, 25-20, 19-25, 19-17 win after trailing 16-15 in the decisive set.

It was a balanced attack for the Falcons against GCU with five players making between five and seven kills. Senior Simone Silvera (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook HS) and sophomore Lauren Van Buren (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa HS) led the way with seven apiece, and junior Jaci Buscher (Lakewood, Colo./Green Mountain HS) followed with six.

Bentley served nine aces, a season-high, with Buscher, senior setter Alex Tator (Los Angeles, Calif./Marlborough School) and freshman Shannon Kelly (Hyde Park, N.Y./Franklin D. Roosevelt HS) each recording two. Tator had 27 assists, and senior libero Lauren Colasanti (Northville, Mich./ Northville HS) made a dozen digs.

Silvera and Van Buren both had a season-best 14 kills against Montevallo and senior Savannah Dominguez (Miami, Fla./Palmer Trinity HS) returned from missing seven matches to put down 12, with a .360 hitting percentage.

Tator finished one assist shy of 50 and one dig away from a double-double. Van Buren completed her double-double with 11 digs, Colasanti made 17 (surpassing 1,400 career in the process) and junior Jessica Segal (West Harrison, N.Y./ Harrison HS) had ten digs.

In the decisive fifth set, Bentley got out to an 8-5 lead before falling behind 14-11. Kills by Buscher and junior Shelby Kreienberg (Pittsford/Pittsford Mendon HS) began the comeback with kills and a Montevallo attack error evened the score at 14.

Following a Montevallo kill, a bad set by the visitors and a shared block by Silvera and Buscher put Bentley back in front, 16-15. Four of the next five points went the way of Montevallo with the match ending on an ace by senior Sarah Guidry (Fort Walton Beach, Fla.).

Junior Rebekah Phelps (Huntsville, Ala.) led the way for 7-4 Montevallo, with 18 kills, 13 digs and a couple blocks. Her team had 14 blocks in the match, including seven by freshman Kristy Bohan (Huntsville, Ala.).

Bentley is back in action Tuesday when it hosts Stonehill College at 7 pm.
