Hoffman Moves to #4 on Division II Win List as Bentley Tops Southern Connecticut, 3-1

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Bentley University women's volleyball coach Sandy Hoffman moved to number four on the all-time Division II victory list as her team opened its Northeast-10 Conference schedule with a four-set win over Southern Connecticut State University Wednesday night at the Pelz Gym.

Hoffman, in her 32nd season with the Falcons, improved to 748-360 all-time to move ahead of former Florida Southern coach Lois Webb. She's two wins away from becoming the 26th coach in women's volleyball history (all divisions) to amass at least 750 victories.

The 25-19, 23-25, 25-23, 25-13 victory featured a career-best 31 digs from junior libero Lauren Colasanti (Northville, Mich./Northville HS), the most by a Falcon since 2010.

Also playing significant roles in the victory were junior middle blocker Savannah Dominguez (Miami, Fla./Palmer Trinity HS) and classmate Alex Tator (Los Angeles, Calif./Marlborough School). Dominguez amassed 13 kills, six blocks and three aces, including one for match point, while Tator gave the Falcons 39 assists, ten digs, four kills and two aces.

After the two squads split the first two sets, there were 15 ties and nine lead changes before Bentley pulled out the pivotal third set. A Southern attack error broke a 20-20 tie, igniting a set-ending 5-3 Falcon spurt that included consecutive aces by sophomore Jaci Buscher (Lakewood, Colo./Green Mountain HS) and was finished by a Dominguez kill.

In that third set, Colasanti was credited with a dozen digs and Tator had the assist on 13 of the Falcons' 15 kills.

Southern picked up the first two points of the fourth set, but ten of the next 11 went up on the Bentley side of the scoreboard and the Falcons were never threatened after that. The Owls (8-4, 0-1 NE-10) had three times as many attack errors (6) in that one as they did kills (2).

As a team, Bentley had 14 aces while stretching its winning streak to four.  In addition to the combined five from Dominguez and Tator, Colasanti and Buscher (18 digs) finished with three aces each.

Juniors Tatiana Froehlich (Newton, Mass./Newton North HS) and Kaleigh Sullivan (Naples, Fla./Harley School, N.Y.) each helped out offensively with nine kills apiece, and Froehlich also had 11 digs and two blocks.

For Southern, Lauren McVey (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) led the way with 12 kills and 22 digs.

Bentley, 7-4 overall and 1-0 NE-10, will be at home this weekend for matinee matches with Pace University Saturday and St. Michael's College Sunday.
