Merrimack Upsets Bentley, 3-1, Despite Strong Performance from Conner

WALTHAM, Mass. – Outside hitters Stephanie Sheehan (Smithtown, N.Y.) and Shaunda Forcier (Gonic, N.H.) combined for 30 kills and 21 digs as Merrimack College upset Bentley University in four sets in Northeast-10 Conference women's volleyball Tuesday night at the Dana Center. Scores were 25-21, 25-20, 16-25 and 25-22.

The Merrimack win came despite a strong performance from Bentley senior middle blocker Grace Conner (Santa Barbara, Calif./San Marcos HS). She tied her career-best with 13 kills while hitting .345, and also gave the Falcons six blocks.

In the opening set, after trailing 19-17, the Warriors closed with an 8-2 spurt, a burst that included three Sheehan kills and three Bentley attack errors. Merrimack (8-14, 1-8 NE-10) used another strong finish in the second set, a 7-1 run after trailing by one at 19-18. Sheehan was also involved in that one, with two kills.

Bentley (9-16, 4-6 NE-10) came alive in the third set and closed it out by scoring the final five points, a run that included a pair of kills by sophomore Savannah Dominguez (Miami, Fla./Palmer Trinity HS). Four of Conner's kills came during the set.

It appeared that the Falcons would force a fifth set after jumping out to an 11-6 lead in the fourth.  That quickly disappeared with Merrimack coming back to tie it at 12-all, and it was still tied at 21 after an ace from Bentley sophomore libero Lauren Colasanti (Northville, Mich./Northville HS). Kills by sophomore Corrine Gosselin (Lawrence) and Sheehan put the Warriors up 23-21 and they went on to capture the match with Sheehan's final kill accounting for the final point.

Sheehan finished with 17 kills and 10 digs, and Forcier followed with 13 and 11. Senior Jenna Reilly (Northport, N.Y.) helped out with four aces.

Bentley sophomore Kelsey Buckner (San Marino, Calif./San Marino HS) posted her seventh double-double of the year, with 10 kills, 12 digs and three aces. Freshman Kyana Miller (San Diego, Calif./Canyon Crest Acad.) recorded 39 assists, two aces, three kills and six digs, and Colasanti finished with 13 digs and two aces.

Bentley plays at Adelphi University Friday night at 7 pm.
