Froehlich Powers Bentley to Five-Set Win at UMass-Lowell

LOWELL, Mass. – Sophomore Tatiana Froehlich (Newton/Newton North HS) established new career bests in kills (12) and digs (9), and matched her previous high in blocks (5), as Bentley University came from behind twice for a 3-2 win over UMass-Lowell in Northeast-10 Conference women's volleyball Tuesday night at Costello Gymnasium.

After a rough start to the night (a 25-15 loss in the opening set), Bentley came back to even the match with a 25-23 decision in the second. The River Hawks picked up the final two points of the third to prevail 26-24, and the Falcons more than answered, with a dominating 25-14 performance in the fourth to again square the match.

A great start to the fifth and deciding set saw Bentley vault out to a 10-1 lead. That spurt included two kills by sophomore Kelsey Buckner (San Marino, Calif./San Marino HS), a kill and a block assist from Froehlich and an ace from sophomore Lauren Colasanti (Northville, Mich./Northville HS).

It's been an up-and-down season for the Falcons, and that was also the case in that final set as UMass-Lowell battled back to cut the lead to two, 12-10. A kill by freshman Jaci Buscher (Lakewood, Colo./Green Mountain HS) and a River Hawk attack error made it match-point, and after a Lowell kill, Buscher ended the night with her 11th kill.

In addition to 12 kills by Froehlich and 11 from Buscher, Bentley (8-14, 3-4 NE-10) received nine apiece from Buckner and sophomore Savannah Dominguez (Miami, Fla./Palmer Trinity HS), and eight from junior Ashley Ahearn (Marshfield/Marshfield HS), who hit a team-best .438.

Freshman Kyana Miller (San Diego, Calif./Canyon Crest Acad.) put up a double-double with 43 assists and 10 digs, and also made five kills. Colasanti had a team-best 14 digs, and freshman Jessica Segal (West Harrison, N.Y./Harriston HS) contributed 13 digs and three aces.

Ella Merrill (Bermuda Dunes, Calif.) led UMass-Lowell (8-10, 3-5 NE-10) with 13 kills and 17 digs, and Olivia Parkins (Dracut) finished with 36 assists and 16 digs.

Bentley will be at home this weekend for conference matches against Saint Rose Friday night and Le Moyne on Saturday.
