Mattson Breaks School Record, Again

DEDHAM, Mass. – For the 34th time in her career and the second straight week, Bentley University senior Stephanie Mattson (Smithfield, R.I./Smithfield HS) broke a school record. The latest came Saturday during the Jay Carisella Coaches' Invitational, hosted by Northeastern University at the Solomon Track.

This one came in the triple jump with her winning performance of 38 feet, nine inches bettering the mark she set last week out in San Diego by 5.75 inches. She took first with a winning margin of more than two feet over runner-up Folasade Akinfe of Dartmouth.

Mattson was a double winner as she also captured the long jump (18'2.25").

Junior Dominique Balzora-Rivert (Templeton/Narragansett Reg. HS) also had a strong showing for Bentley. She was third of nine in the triple jump (34'4.25"), sixth of 19 in the 100 meters (13.20 seconds in the finals after qualifying in 13.05) and 13th of 25 in the 200 (27.94).

Among the others who scored for Bentley were junior Kirsten Lebreux (Biddeford, Maine/ Biddeford HS), junior Abbie Newman (Hanson/Whitman-Hanson Reg. HS) and freshman Megan Niedzwiecki (Old Orchard Beach, Maine/Old Orchard Beach HS) in the shot put. Lebreux was sixth of 11 in the 400 (1:05.40), Newman eighth of 14 in the 800 (2:30.72) and Niedziecki improved on her personal best while placing seventh in the shot put (29'3.75").

As a team, Bentley was fifth among eight teams with 47 points. The University of New Hampshire took the championship by 27 points over Northeastern, 216-189.

Next Saturday, Bentley will compete in the Stonehill Skyhawk Invitational.
