Mattson Opens Outdoor Season with Win in 800

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – After a record-setting indoor season, Bentley University senior Stephanie Mattson (Smithfield, R.I./Smithfield HS) captured the 800 meters as the Falcon women's track and field team opened their outdoor season at the Bridgewater State Invitational Saturday.

Mattson, running in the 800 outdoors for the first time as a collegian, turned in a 2:21.23 to capture the 41-competitor race. She bested the runner-up, Kelsey Walak of Northeastern, by about a second-and-a-half.

Freshman Samantha Bilodeau (New Ipswich, N.H./Mascenic Reg. HS) achieved a third-place finish in the 5,000, reaching the finish in 19:27.41.

Bentley had two of the top ten in the 60, with juniors Dom Balzora-Rivert (Templeton, Mass./ Narragansett Reg. HS) sixth (27.87) and Chantel Lewis (Bronx, N.Y./Manhattan Center for Science and Math) tenth (28.88).

Freshman Chinwe Agbazue (Hillside, N.J./Hillside HS) had a solid outdoor debut in the long jump, placing eighth of 24 with a distance of 14 feet, 10.5 inches.

Bentley totaled 25 points in the 17-team meet, good for ninth place.

Next week, Mattson and her teammates will return to her home state for the Bryant Invitational.
