Hurwitz Breaks 29-Year-Old School Record; Mattson Wins Twice at Poyau Memorial

WALTHAM, Mass. – Highlights for the Bentley University women's track and field team during the Reggie Poyau Memorial at Brandeis University Saturday included a school record in the 60 meter hurdles for sophomore Sydney Hurwitz (Newton/Newton North HS) and two victories for senior standout Stephanie Mattson (Smithfield, R.I./Smithfield HS).

Hurwitz was second of 20 in the hurdles but her time of 9.48 seconds broke the school record by three-hundredths of a second. It had belonged to Susan Chamberlain since she turned in the 9.51 back in 1990.

Hurwitz was also fourth of 17 in the long jump (15'9"), ninth of 36 in the 200 (28.79) and 11th of 37 in the 60 (8.61).

Mattson's victories came in the 400 with a clocking of 59.39 seconds and the triple jump with a distance of 16'11.25". She was also second of 14 in the triple jump with a 36'1.5".

Mattson led a strong Bentley showing in the 400. Senior Abby Forman (Altamont, N.Y./ Guilderland HS) was third (1:06.22) and freshman Kaitlyn Helfer (Northford, Conn./Sacred Heart Academy) was fifth (1:06.35).

Junior Dom Balzora-Rivert (Templeton/Narragansett Reg. HS) had a pair of fourth-place finishes, in the 60 (8.31) and in the triple jump (33'2"). She was also eighth of 36 in the 200 (28.68).

Bentley also received a third-place finish from sophomore Abby Caulfield (Northport, N.Y./ Northport HS) in the 600 with her 1:48.71 a new PR by 1.15 seconds.

Bentley's score of 62 points was good for fourth among eight teams. Southern Maine edged Brandeis for team honors, 121.5-118, and Merrimack took third (94.75).

Next weekend, Bentley will compete at the Reggie Lewis Center Friday (Joe Donohue Invitational) and at Harvard Sunday (Greater Boston Track Club Invitational).
