Varsell Earns 1st-Team Capital One Academic All-America Honors for 3rd Time; Dooley & Higgins Also Honored

WALTHAM, Mass. – Amy Varsell (Burlington, Conn./Lewis S. Mills HS), the most decorated student-athlete in Bentley University women's track history, and Bentley cross country standout Tara Dooley (Lee/Lee HS) have been selected for the 2014 Capital One NCAA Division II Academic All-America® Women's Track & Field and Cross Country team by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Coach Kevin Curtin's team was also represented on the Capital One NCAA Division II Academic All-America team in men's track and cross country with recent graduate Conor Higgins (Randolph, N.J./Randolph HS) receiving third-team recognition.

Varsell, a seven-time All-America, became only the second student-athlete in Bentley history to earn first-team Academic All-America three times, joining Jason Hobbs (track, cross country) on that select list. She graduated Summa Cum Laude in May 2013 and received her Masters in Accountancy last month.

In her final year of collegiate eligibility, Varsell earned All-America honors in both cross country and indoor track. She placed 39th overall at the NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships and ran to fourth in the mile at the NCAA Division II Indoor Championships in March.

The seven-time All-New England and eight-time Academic All-Northeast-10 honoree finished her career as Bentley's school record holder in six individual events (400 and 800 outdoors, 400, 500, 800 and 3000 indoors) and four relays.

Dooley, who'll enter her senior year with a 3.87 grade point average as an accountancy major, finished fourth in the NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships last fall, the highest finish by an East Region woman since 2006. Her time of 21:07.3 put her across the finish line just about 16 seconds after the winner.

Dooley finished first in the NCAA Division II East Regional, following second-place showings in both 2011 and 2012, and was named the Northeast-10 Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Year, the NE-10 Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence recipient for women's cross country and the 2013 USTFCCCA East Region Runner of the Year. Bentley's number one finisher in every cross country race during the last three years, Dooley spent the spring semester studying abroad in Grenoble, France.

Higgins, who graduated with a 3.75 as a corporate finance and accounting major, captained the 2013 Bentley cross country team and earned Academic All-Northeast-10 honors following the indoor season. Outdoors this spring, he helped Bentley set a school record (7:39.32) and finish sixth in the 4x800 relay at the New England Championships.

His final season included a seventh in the 800 at the NE-10 indoor championships, 69th at the NE-10 cross country championships and a number seven ranking in the Division II East Region in the outdoor 1500. On Bentley's all-time lists, he ranks seventh in the outdoor 1500 (3:56.84) and tenth in the outdoor two-mile (9:51.90).

Bentley has amassed a total of 65 Academic All-America awards all-time, ranking in the top ten all-time among current Division II institutions.

The Capital One Division II Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II national governance structure to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2013-14 Division II Academic All-America® teams program.
