Powell, Leahy Turn in Solid Day One Performances in UMass Multis

AMHERST, Mass. – Bentley University freshman Matt Powell (Charlton/St. John's Shrewsbury) and sophomore Olyvia Leahy (New Bedford/New Bedford HS) turned in solid performances Thursday during the opening day of the UMass Multis at the UMass Track and Field Complex.

Powell was second of seven competitors in the decathlon with a score of 2,888 points after five of ten events, and Leahy was sixth of nine in the heptathlon with 2,037 points following four of seven events.

Powell earned at least 600 points in four events with a high of 637 in the 100 meter dash. His time of 12.07 seconds was fourth best on the day.

Powell finished first in the long jump with his distance of 20 feet, 3 inches a meet-best. He also ran the 400 in 54.68, cleared 5'10.75" in the high jump and threw the shot 27'5.5".

Leahy's most productive event was the 100 meter hurdles with her time of 16.81 seconds good for sixth place and only 0.12 seconds off her personal best. She ran the 200 in 29.14, threw the shot 26 feet and posted a height of four-and-a-half feet in the high jump.

The competition will conclude on Friday.
