Toft, Adia Lead Adelphi Past Bentley 5-0 in Northeast-10 First Round

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Senior Maria Toft and junior Gaby Adia each won two matches as Adelphi knocked Bentley out of the Northeast-10 Women's Tennis Championships on Tuesday with a 5-0 victory in the first round.

The Falcons found themselves in an early hole after losing all three doubles matches, down 3-0 where the first team to five points in the postseason wins. Toft and Adia closed out the match for the Panthers in singles with wins in the No. 1 and No. 4 matches.

Adelphi won the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles matches in lopsided fashion. Toft and Bianca Posa beat the team of Ludmila Yamus (Deer Park, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills) and Stephania Adondakis (Salt Lake City, Utah/Waterford School) 8-1 in the No. 1 match, and Adia and Taylor King bested freshmen Catherine Gianino (Burlington, Mass./Burlington) and Brittani Hetyei (Vernon, N.J./Vernon Township) 8-2 in the No. 3 match.

Seniors Rachael Litton (Burlington, Ontario/Nelson) and Paulina Sotomayor (San Antonio, Texas/Ronald Reagan) pushed Michelle Gurda and Samra Redzematovic in the No. 2 match, but ultimately fell 8-6.

In singles, Toft defeated Yamus 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 1 match, and Adia bested sophomore Melanie Scott (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug) 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 4 match.

Adelphi now goes on to the semifinals, where they will meet the top seed Southern New Hampshire. Bentley's season comes to an end at 9-9.
