Bentley Defeats SNHU 1-0 to Advance to NE10 Semifinals

Waltham, Mass. – Sophomore Emily McGrath (Brewster, Mass./Nauset) scored in the 11th minute and the defense produced another shutout as Bentley defeated Southern New Hampshire 1-0 on Sunday in the quarterfinals of the NE10 Women's Soccer Championship.

The Falcons, the No. 4 seed, will now roll on to the semifinals on Thursday, where they will meet the top seed Saint Rose.

McGrath's goal came after midfielder Rebecca Nguyen (Dudley, Mass./Shepherd Hill) helped win the ball back for Bentley in its attacking end. She fed a quick pass to McGrath who streaked down the left wing and once she got to the top of the penalty box, chipped a shot to the near post for the goal, her 3rd of the season.

Bentley limited SNHU to just two shots in the 1st half as they led 1-0.

In the 2nd half in the 57th minute sophomore Amanda Andriano (Fort Salonga, N.Y./Saint Anthony's) nearly made it 2-0 for Bentley after she made a steal off a SNHU clearing attempt and fired a shot from 25 yards that hit the crossbar and just stayed out

In the game's latter stages, Falcons goalkeeper Kat Hassapis (North Reading, Mass./North Reading) made two big saves to keep Bentley in front.

She first denied a shot by Shae Roys from about 20 yards away in the 78th minute. Then in the game's dying moments came up with an even bigger save. Emily Roan chipped a shot on goal from about 20 yards to the upper corner, but Hassapis tipped it over the crossbar. Bentley cleared out the ensuing corner kick and secured the 1-0 victory to advance to Thursday's semifinal.

The shutout is Bentley's 10th of the season and 7th in the last eight games.

Bentley improved to 10-6-2 on the season with the win, its second over SNHU this season. They advance on to the semifinals for the first time since 2002.
