No. 24 SNHU Hangs on Over Bentley, 3-2

Manchester, N.H. – Senior Alyssa Valente (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) and junior Stephanie Helin (Manchester, Conn./East Catholic) scored goals for Bentley, but No. 24 ranked Southern New Hampshire had just enough to hang on for a 3-2 victory over the Falcons on Wednesday night.

Valente scored her 4th goal of the season in the 7th minute to give Bentley an early 1-0 lead, but the Penmen answered with two quick goals 1:39 apart to take a 2-1 lead after nine minutes. SNHU scored its 3rd goal in the 50th minute, before Helin cut their lead to 3-2 with a goal in the 78th minute, but the Penmen were able to hang on the rest of the way.

Valente's goal was setup by Carly Kohler (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip), Brandi McDonald (East Bridgewater, Mass./East Bridgewater) and Helin. Kohler got the play started with a pass to McDonald on the right wing. McDonald sent a cross into the six yard box where Helin and Valente were waiting. Helin knocked the ball down and Valente pounced on the loose ball to shoot it into the back of the net for the goal.

SNHU though scored twice just 1:39 apart to jump out to a 2-1 lead, first getting a goal from forward Sydney Carney, who finished off a centering pass from Sydney Crema from close range. That was followed by forward Dorthea Glorud's goal in the 9th minute.

The Penmen added to their lead 4:20 after halftime as midfielder Ariana Silvia scored from 15 yards out after taking a pass from Crema.

Bentley made it a one goal game with just over 12 minutes remaining on Helin's goal. Junior Sammy Millmann (Northport, N.Y./Northport) played a short corner kick to Helin, who fired a low shot on goal from about 20 yards away on the left wing that got through traffic in front of the net for her team leading 6th goal of the season.

The Penmen though were able to hang on the rest of the way to secure its 6th win in a row.

Bentley (2-5-2 NE10) will look to bounce back on Saturday when they host Southern Connecticut.
