Simms & Yanez Lead New Haven Past Bentley

WALTHAM, Mass. – Junior Amber Simms had a hat trick and senior Monica Yanez had two goals and one assist to lead the New Haven Chargers to a 5-1 victory over the Bentley University women's soccer team in a Northeast-10 match Saturday afternoon.

Bentley started this match brightly and jumped out to a 1-0 lead on the strength of freshman Ana Tantum's (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull) third goal of the season in the eighth minute, a strong shot from 20 yards away. Senior Casey Neary (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) chipped her a pass at the top of the penalty area. Tantum then settled the ball at her feet and fired a shot that beat New Haven keeper Natasha Purchla to the upper-right corner of the net.

The Falcons held that 1-0 lead for about 23 minutes, until the Chargers tied it up in the 31st minute on the first of two first half goals from Simms. New Haven then took a 2-1 lead in the 38th minute on Simms' second. With plenty of space on the left wing, senior Monica Yanez fed Simms a pass to the center of the box, giving her a clean shot from 15 yards away for the goal.

After halftime, New Haven then struck quickly with three goals in the first 14-plus minutes to put the match out of reach. A 51st minute goal by Yanez, on a breakaway off a through ball from midfield, made it 3-1. Simms completed her hat trick in the 53rd minute with a shot from 15 yards out, and Yanez scored her second of the half in the 60th minute to make the score 5-1.

The goals brought both Simms' and Yanez's tally to seven on the season.

The Chargers (4-0-2, 2-0-1 NE-10) stay unbeaten on the season, while Bentley (1-4-0, 0-3-0 NE-10) drops its third straight. The Falcons' next match is Tuesday afternoon at home against NE-10 foe Saint Michael's. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
