No. 11 Mercy Holds on in Final Seconds to Top No. 18 Bentley, 10-9

Waltham, Mass. – No. 11 ranked Mercy scored the tie breaking goal with six seconds left, then escaped a late scoring chance by Bentley as the visiting Mavericks slipped past the No. 18 ranked Falcons 10-9 on Saturday.

With the game tied 9-9, Mercy's Taylor Bishop scored on a wraparound shot with six seconds left to give them the lead.

Bentley won the ensuing draw control and called a timeout to set up a final play with 4.4 seconds left. A heave down the field resulted in a foul on Mercy, which gave Bentley a free-position shot with just .2 seconds left. Sophomore Glenna Gies (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) was able to get the shot off, but her effort hit the post and Mercy escaped with the victory.

The second half was tightly contested the whole way. The half started tied 4-4 and neither team led by more than one goal. There were three lead changes and three ties in the final 30 minutes.

Two straight goals by Bentley freshman Kenzie Lutpon (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua) gave them a 7-5 lead at the 21:34 mark, but Mercy scored two in a row to tie it. Mercy then scored three of the next four goals to take a 9-8 lead with 7:01 remaining.

Gies tied the game again with a goal at the 6:01 mark, on a free position shot. That made it 9-9, and neither team scored again until the final goal.

In the first half, sophomore Caroline Boudreau (Foxborough, Mass./Foxborough) had two goals, and Lutpon and Jillian Lynch (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) also scored.
