Bentley and Assumption Set for Rematch in NE10 Quarterfinals on Wednesday

Waltham, Mass. – Bentley and Assumption played a double overtime thriller back on March 19 that Bentley won, and now the two teams will meet again on Wednesday night, this time in the quarterfinals of the NE10 Championship. The game will be hosted by Bentley and gets underway at 7:00 pm.

That victory over the Greyhounds was one of 11 for the Falcons in the regular season. They went 9-4 in the NE10 and were part of a four-way tie for 3rd place, along with Assumption, New Haven and Pace. Tiebreakers earned Bentley the No. 4 seed, with Assumption the No. 5 seed.

Bentley will go into the game ranked No. 18 by the IWLCA and Assumption No. 17.

In the earlier win over Assumption, Bentley scored five of the final six goals over the final 10 minutes of regulation to force overtime. Freshman Glenna Gies (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) scored a man-up goal with 1:14 remaining to send the game to OT tied 12-12.

After a scoreless first OT period, the teams went down to the wire in the second overtime. Falcons goalie Eliza Bresler (Newton, Mass./Newton North) made a big save with 29 seconds remaining to deny an Assumption scoring chance. Bentley then had a successful clear and transitioned down the other end of the field, where sophomore Cara McCarthy (Salem, N.H./Central Catholic) scored the winner with just one second left.

Wednesday's game will be just the third all-time meeting in the postseason between the two local rivals. They met previously in the 2002 semifinals and 2003 quarterfinals. Overall it will be the 25th all-time meeting.

The other quarterfinal games in the NE10 will see the No. 1 seed Le Moyne host No. 8 Stonehill, No. 2 Adelphi host No. 7 Merrimack, and No. 3 Pace host No. 6 New Haven.

The semifinals and finals of the NE10 Championship will take place on Saturday and Sunday, both hosted by the highest remaining seed after the quarterfinals.
