No. 17 Stonehill Hangs on for 7-6 Win over Bentley in Defensive Struggle
EASTON, Mass. – Stonehill scored the final two goals of the game, and neither team scored over the final nine-plus minutes, as the Skyhawks edged Bentley 7-6 on Wednesday night in a Northeast-10 women's lacrosse game.
The two rivals were playing for the first time since last season's quarterfinal game in the NE10 playoffs, which Bentley won in the final seconds 9-8.
A 3-0 Bentley run in the middle part of the second half gave them a 6-5 lead with just over 12 minutes remaining. Senior Ellie Shuman (Nashua, N.H./Nashua North) scored an unassisted goal at 20:19 to cut Stonehill's lead to 5-4. The Skyhawks were then given a yellow card at the 18:35 mark to give the Falcons a man-advantage, and they took advantage with a goal from senior attacker Ciara Morley (Irvington, N.Y./Irvington) to tie the game 5-5 at 18:01.
Exactly five minutes later, junior Carolyn Cruise (East Greenwich, R.I./East Greenwich) netted an unassisted goal to give Bentley its first lead of the night at 6-5.
However, the lead lasted just 35 seconds as the Skyhawks tied it with a goal from attacker Shannon Booth. Stonehill then went ahead 7-6 with a free-position goal from Taylor Shannahan at 9:23. That was the final goal of the night.
A low-scoring first half saw Stonehill lead 3-2 at halftime. The Bentley goals came from seniors Hannah Lindgren (Southborough, Mass./Algonquin) and Taylor Lunden (Agawam, Mass./Agawam).
Falcons goalie Lauren Ochs (Rochester, N.Y./Irondequoit) made nine saves. Stonehill had a 16-13 edge in shots on goal.
Junior Kathleen Gillespie (Topsfield, Mass./Masconomet) had a game-high four caused turnovers for Bentley.
The Falcons, now 3-5 in the NE10, are back in action on Saturday at Southern New Hampshire.
