No. 17 Bentley Upset by Pace 11-8

WALTHAM, Mass. – 17th ranked Bentley was upset by visiting Pace 11-8 on Tuesday night as the Falcons ultimately could not overcome a slow start in the first half. Meredith Hart (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) led the Bentley offense with a hat trick.

Pace jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the first 11-plus minutes of the 1st half, but despite a fight back by the Falcons that saw them get to within two goals three times in the 2nd half, they could never overcome that early deficit.

After the 5-0 start by Pace, Bentley scored five of the next six goals. That included a 3-0 run that took less than a minute and a half and saw midfielder Erin O'Connor (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) score the last two goals, the second of which cut the deficit to 6-5 at the 8:58 mark.

The Setters though closed the half strong with the last two goals, coming at the 3:51 and 19 second marks to lead 8-5 at halftime.

The teams alternated the six goals scored in the 2nd half, starting with Hart scoring just 58 seconds into the half, but also meant that Bentley never got closer than two goals.

Kathleen Gillespie (Topsfield, Mass./Masconomet) and Hart had the other two 2nd half goals for Bentley. Gillespie's coming with 22:27 remaining and Hart's 3rd of the night with 6:53 to play.

The defeat drops Bentley's Northeast-10 record to 0-2, while the Setters' conference record goes to 1-1. The Falcons will look to get back in the win column on Saturday when they host Adelphi at 11:00 am.
