Falcons Outlast Assumption in OT for Stevens’ 900th Bentley Victory

WALTHAM, Mass. – Freshman guard Ella Thompson (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove HS), senior center Monica Viapiano (Holden/Holy Name HS) and sophomore guard Kari Brekke (Appleton, Wisc,/ Appleton North HS) combined for 61 points as the Bentley University  Falcons worked overtime to give coach Barbara Stevens her 900th Falcon win, 80-73, in Northeast-10 Conference women's basketball Wednesday night on Barbara Stevens Court.

Stevens, who was named a finalist for the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame on Friday, became only the fourth women's basketball coach in NCAA history to win 900 games at one school. Fourth on the all-time win list, she improved to 900-198 in 34 Bentley seasons with her 1,057th win overall.

It was a milestone that only Pat Summitt (Tennessee), Geno Auriemma (UConn) and Tara VanDerveer (Stanford) had previously achieved.

Thompson led Bentley (18-7, 13-4 NE10) with a career-high 23 points, Viapiano followed with 20 and Brekke finished with 18 points.

In the overtime, Bentley outscored the visiting Greyhounds 19-12 overall and 11-2 during the first 3:04. That early burst began with Thompson's fourth three-pointer of the night. Following an Assumption basket, the Falcons scored the next eight, including four by Viapiano.

Thompson, who had nine in the OT, made it 74-65 with a driving lay-up with 1:10 left and sank four free throws in the final 55 seconds to help lock up the victory.

Assumption (13-13, 7-11) had the lead only once all night, that coming with 1:20 to play when sophomore guard Emma Poulin (South Portland, Maine) drained a three from the right side to make it a 61-59 game. Viapiano answered with a lay-up, squaring the score at 61-all with 1:02 to play.

Both teams had opportunities to win during the final minute of regulation, but neither was able to break the deadlock.

Bentley started fast, scoring the game's first ten points while holding Assumption scoreless until the 4:15 mark of the first quarter. The Falcon run included three-pointers from Thompson and graduate forward Megan Lewis (Sevenoaks, England).

During a 13-minute stretch from late in the second until the 2:17 mark of the third, Bentley put together a 25-14 run to open a 15-point lead, 48-33. That included eight points from Brekke and five from Thompson.

Assumption closed the third with eight unanswered, including threes from both Brianna Capacchione (Washington Township, N.J.) and Katherine Golden (Millis), a pair of senior guards, to draw within seven, 48-41.

The Hounds tied the game three times in the fourth quarter before finally taking the lead with 80 seconds left.

Thompson made 7 of 14 shots overall and also pulled down seven rebounds. Viapiano made 8 of her 12 field goal attempts and finished with a game-high nine rebounds. Brekke's stat line included six rebounds and two assists.

Capacchione led Assumption with 30 points, including 24 after halftime and nine free throws in as many attempts.

Bentley outshot the Hounds 48-32 percent and controlled the boards, 50-32, but was hampered by 25 turnovers, nearly twice Assumption's 13.

Bentley will close out its home schedule on Saturday with a 1:30 pm Senior Day game against Franklin Pierce.
