Bentley’s 2014 National Championship Team & Battista Highlight D2 East Hoops Women’s All-Decade Team

WALTHAM, Mass. – The D2 East Women's Basketball All-Decade Team was unveiled Friday with Bentley University well represented. The Falcons' 2013-14 NCAA Division II national championship team, a perfect 35-0 under the leadership of Barbara Stevens, was recognized as the East Region Team of the Decade, and 2013-14 Women's Basketball Coaches Association Division II National Player of the Year Lauren Battista (Easton) '14 was the choice as East Region Player of the Decade.

The All-Region first team included Bentley forward Jen Gemma '17 (Milton), the top scorer in program history, and guard Kim Brennan '11 (Locust Valley, N.Y.), was included on the All-Region second team. Honorable mention All-Decade recognition went to center Jacqui Brugliera '14 (Fitchburg) and Courtney Finn '14 (Winthrop).

Honorable mention choices for Team of the Decade included two other Bentley teams, 2011-12 and 2015-16.

The national championship team, only the second Division II women's basketball team to compete a season with an unblemished record at the time, swept through the regular season before capturing both the Northeast-10 and NCAA Division II East Region titles in convincing fashion. Following wins over Drury and Cal Poly Pomona at the Elite Eight, Stevens' Falcons staged a dramatic comeback in the national championship game, rallying from nine down with 5:30 to play and six down with just over three minutes left, to capture the crown, 73-65 over West Texas A&M.

The much-heralded Battista finished her career with 2,112 points, 874 rebounds and 366 assists while leading Bentley to an amazing four-year record of 121-14, including a remarkable 27-3 in the postseason. Her teams made three trips to the Elite Eight and captured the Northeast-10 tournament championship four straight years. Her lengthy list of honors included Honda Division II Athlete of the Year and Capital One Division II Academic All-America of the Year for all sports.

Gemma, a freshman on the national championship team, finished her career as Bentley's all-time scorer with her 2,151 points fourth most in NE10 history. The All-America averaged over 18 points each of her final three seasons, surpassed 1,000 career rebounds and was a two-time NE10 Player of the Year.

Brennan, a three-time All-Northeast-10 honoree who finished her career fifth on Bentley's all-time scoring list (1,695), was the Most Outstanding Player in the 2011 NCAA Division II East Regional after scoring the final seven points and making a key steal, all in the final 35 seconds, during the regional final.

Brugliera, a four-year teammate of Battista who was named the MVP of the NCAA Division II Final Four in 2014, finished her standout career with 1,493 points and 821 rebounds. She collected All-Northeast-10 honors each year during her four seasons.

Finn was also a key member of the national championship team, earning All-America honors while finishing her career with 1,597 points and 799 rebounds. She was a three-time All-Northeast-10 choice, including a pair of first-team honors.

The 2011-12 team posted a 31-4 record with a double-overtime win over Franklin Pierce in the NE10 semifinals, a 79-52 rout of Southern Connecticut in the conference final, an 84-73 victory over Holy Family in the East Regional final and a comeback from 19 down for an Elite Eight win over number-one ranked Wayne State to reach the national semifinals.

The Falcons also reached the Final Four in 2016, using a smothering defense to edge Virginia Union, 53-52, in the national quarterfinals. The run to the Elite Eight included a 67-60 victory over American International in the conference championship game and regional wins over Saint Anselm, Queens and New York Tech.
