Bentley Shuts Down Holy Family for 4th Straight Win

WALTHAM, Mass. – Runs of 12-0 to start the second quarter and 15-3 during the third propelled the Bentley University Falcons to a 74-52 win over Holy Family University in non-conference women's basketball on Barbara Stevens Court Sunday afternoon.

Bentley, 8-3 overall after notching its fourth straight win, limited the 4-4 Tigers to a season-low point total and only 32 points over the final three quarters. It was the third time in the last four games the Falcons allowed 52 or less.

The Bentley offense, which shot at a 57 percent success rate in the second half, featured four double-figure scorers with senior center Monica Viapiano (Holden/Holy Name HS) and sophomore guard Kari Brekke (Appleton, Wisc./Appleton North HS) at the top of the list with 16 points apiece.

Two of the game's three lead changes came in an opening quarter that ended with Holy Family in front 20-17. Bentley led by as many as six, 12-6, before the Tigers finished the quarter with a 14-5 spurt. That run included seven points from freshman guard Moe Moore (Philadelphia, Pa.)

After Moore's three-point play put the Tigers up 20-17, it would be more than seven minutes before the visitors scored again. Five different Falcons scored during the 12-0 burst, which included a three-point play from junior guard Katie Meriggioli (Waunakee, Wisc./Edgewood HS) and the first of three treys from Brekke.

With a five-point advantage with just under six minutes left in the third, a Viapiano lay-up launched the 15-3 run that made it a 17-point game, 52-35 with about a minute remaining in the quarter. Freshman guard Ella Thompson (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove HS) was the top scorer during that stretch with five points.

A 9-2 run midway through the fourth, which was capped by a Brekke triple, gave Bentley its largest lead of the afternoon, 69-46 with 4:14 remaining.

Brekke, who also had eight rebounds and three steals, made six of ten shots overall and half of her six attempts from deep. Viapiano also shot well, finishing seven of 12 overall.

Also in doubles for the Falcons were senior forward Megan Lewis (Sevenoaks, England) and Meriggioli, with 11 and 10, respectively. Meriggioli also helped Bentley to a 44-35 rebound advantage with a season-high 12 boards.

Sophomore Kolleen Bouchard (Houlton, Maine/Houlton HS) provided a spark off the bench with eight points on four-of-five shooting and a team-best plus-21. At the end of both middle quarters, she beat the buzzer with a driving lay-up.

About two-thirds of Holy Family's offense came from two players, Moore with a game-high 19 and senior forward Elizabeth Radley (Hainesport, N.J./) with 17.

Bentley shot nearly 47 percent overall, including 62 percent inside the three-point line, and limited Holy Family to 33 percent. The rebounding advantage helped the Falcons outscore the Tigers in terms of second chance points, 19-6.

Bentley will wrap up the 2019 portion of the schedule Saturday with a 1:30 game against Southern New Hampshire.
