No. 3 Bentley Buries 11 from Deep during 64-52 Win over Assumption

WORCESTER, Mass. – Freshman forward Marissa Fontaine (Franklin/Bishop Feehan HS) buried four of her team's 11 three-pointers and grad student Becca Musgrove (Plainview, N.Y./St. Anthony's HS) led the Falcons with 16 points and five steals as Bentley University prevailed over Assumption College, 64-52, in Northeast-10 Conference women's basketball Tuesday evening at the Laska Gym.

Bentley, which moved up to third in the WBCA Division II national coaches poll that was released earlier in the day, improved to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in conference play. On the other hand, 23 turnovers played a key role in Assumption remaining winless (0-3, 0-3 NE10).

Two three-pointers from Fontaine, her third and fourth of the opening half, sent Bentley into the break riding a 10-point lead, 32-22. The six-footer was perfect from downtown in the game and accounted for nine of her team's 15 second-quarter points.

Bentley started each first-half quarter slow, but closed with a run. A 12-3 over the final three minutes of the first produced a 17-11 lead, and a 12-2 run over the final 5:20 of the second broke a 20-20 tie.

The second half was a different story as the Falcons began each quarter with a run. In the third, a 10-4 burst that included four points from junior center Victoria Lux (Arundel, Maine/Thornton Academy) made it a 16-point difference with 3:49 left, 62-46.

In the fourth, Musgrove scored the first five points, on a corner three and a put-back. That produced the game's biggest lead, 50-33 with 8:22 to play.

A key stretch in the final quarter was a run of six straight for the Falcons. A free throw from senior guard Macchi Smith (Los Angeles, Calif./Windward School), a lay-up from sophomore forward Monica Viapiano (Holden/Holy Name HS) and a three from the left side by senior guard Lauren Green (Damascus, Md./Damascus HS) restored the Bentley advantage to 15, 61-46, with 2:42 left.

Musgrove, the game's top scorer, also had three assists and the same number of rebounds. Lux, the reigning NE10 Player of the Week, put up a 12-point, 12-rebound double-double with two blocks, and Fontaine netted her 12 points on 4-or-4 shooting from deep, all in the first half.

Bentley also received nine points from Green, all coming via the three, and seven rebounds from Viapiano.

Junior center Jordan Hawkins (Glen Burnie, Md.) led the way for Assumption with 12 points.

Bentley shot better from the field, 50-46, and from deep, knocking down 11 of 23 triples as compared to only two of nine for the home team. Rebounds favored the Hounds, 45-37, but eight more Assumption turns resulted in a 23-9 Falcon advantage in points off.

Bentley will be in action twice this weekend, hosting New York Institute of Technology Saturday and Bridgeport on Sunday.
