Gemma Scores 28, but Bentley Falls to LIU Post, 66-57

WALTHAM, Mass. – Senior guard Chelsea Williams (Copiague, N.Y.) scored 26 points and senior forward Jessica Little (Wyandanch, N.Y.) came off the bench to drill four three-pointers in only nine minutes of action as LIU Post took over in the second half for a 66-57 win over Bentley University in non-conference women's basketball Monday night at the Dana Center.

Bentley's first loss in its last four games spoiled a strong effort from Falcon sophomore post Jen Gemma (Milton/Fontbonne Academy), who finished with 28 points and 12 rebounds.

LIU Post, in its first meeting with Bentley since the Falcons prevailed in the 2014 NCAA Division II East Regional final en route to the national championship, dominated the boards, 44-33, and limited the Falcons to just two three-pointers in 20 attempts. Bentley entered the game ranked 16th in Division II in three-point accuracy at .388.

Bentley was down just one at the half, 26-25, despite a 1-for-9 start to the game and no points in the final 4:50. Gemma carried the load during the first 20 minutes as she had 16 points and ten rebounds. On the other hand, the rest of the Falcons provided only nine points (on 4-of-22 shooting) and seven rebounds.

Gemma twice gave the Falcons the lead in the second half with a lay-up at 17:30 making it 31-29 and a top-of-the-key three at 13:37 making it 37-36.

With Bentley on the short end of a 44-43 score, three-pointers by Williams, from the left corner, and Little, from straightaway, gave the Pioneers the biggest lead of the game up to that point, 50-43 with 7:10 left. In between those two triples, Bentley missed two shots and committed a turnover.

Another Little triple and a driving lay-up by junior guard Quanisha Ratley (Brooklyn, N.Y.) extended the visitor's lead to ten, 57-47, with 3:50 left, and Bentley never got closer than eight the rest of the way.

Gemma's ninth double-double saw her make 12 of 19 from the floor. Freshman guard Lauren Green (Damascus, Md./Damascus HS) followed with 12 points, half of which came in the final four minutes, and senior forward Carlene Kluge (Reading/Reading HS) helped out with seven. The rest of the club managed only ten points, making only 4 of 29 shots.

Williams made 10 of 22 shots and also gave the 6-5 Pioneers five rebounds, two assists and two steals. Little provided 14 on 5-of-6 shooting, and LIU Post received a 13-point, 12-rebound double-double from six-foot-two junior Nyasia Davis (Rahway, N.J.).

While LIU Post shot 44 percent overall , 56 percent in the second half and 53 percent from deep (8-15), Bentley was held to one of its lowest marks all season, .359. The Pioneers turned the ball over 21 times but the Falcons were rarely able to take advantage, with just 14 points off, including four in the final minute.

Bentley, 7-6, will be back in action Wednesday with a 5:30 home game against Le Moyne College.
