This Day in Bentley History: April 12, 2014 - A Pair of Kennedy Triples Help Bentley Sweep Franklin Pierce

WALTHAM, Mass. – Freshman right fielder Kelsey Kennedy (Bedford, N.H./Bedford HS) hit a walk-off triple to give Bentley University a 2-1 game one victory and also tripled and scored in the nightcap as the Falcons completed the sweep of Franklin Pierce University, 5-3, in Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division softball Saturday afternoon at Bentley.

Bentley, which also beat Franklin Pierce on Friday, improved to 13-11 overall and 5-3 in the Northeast-10 after extending its winning streak to four games.

In the bottom of the seventh of the opener, with the score even at 1-1, senior first baseman Samantha Tierney (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketchum HS) led off with a walk. She was replaced by freshman pinch-runner Katelyn Lebreux (Biddeford, Maine/Biddeford) and after a pair of strikeouts, scored all the way from first on Kennedy's triple to the left-center field gap.

Bentley grabbed a 1-0 lead in the third when sophomore pitcher Halley McDevitt (San Ramon, Calif./San Ramon Valley HS) singled and eventually scored on a grounder to short by sophomore shortstop Alex Borrelli (Salem, N.H./Central Catholic HS).

It remained that way until the top of the seventh with junior left fielder Jamie Wiley (Cape Vincent, N.Y.) led off with a home run to left.

Sophomore Kelly Ferris (Seymour, Conn./Seymour HS) was credited with her fourth win of the season after she pitched two innings in relief of McDevitt. McDevitt, in five scoreless innings, allowed only two hits and one walk.

In game two, Bentley broke a 2-2 tie with three runs in the fifth. Kennedy hit a one-out triple and scored the go-ahead run when the relay throw to third ailed out of play. Freshman designated player Chelsea Vena (Matawan, N.J./Saint John Vianney HS) followed with an infield single, grad student Laura McDonough (Braintree/Braintree HS) walked, Borrelli singled up the middle (her third hit of the game) and senior center fielder Jackie Gauthier (Braintree/Braintree HS) doubled to right, plating both Vena and McDonough.

Franklin Pierce (4-17, 1-9 NE-10 Northeast) picked up one run in the sixth to pull within two and threatened in the seventh, loading the bases with no out with a hit batter, a bunt single and an error. Ferris, who came in an inning earlier to strand a runner on third, struck out the Ravens' third hitter for the first out. Bentley junior left fielder Shannon Connor (West Haven, Conn./West Haven HS) made a nice play on a liner off the bat of Ashley Noke (Cumberland, R.I.) and threw to second to complete the game-ending double play.

Bentley's eight hits included three by Borrelli and two from Kennedy, and the Falcons received two RBI from Tierney as well as Gauthier.

Freshman Michelle DeVito (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) earned the win with 1.2 innings of relief and Ferris picked up the final four outs to record her fourth save of the season, extending her own school record.
