Bentley Gains Split on Day 1 of Rollins Round Robin; Needle Drives in 5

WINTER PARK, Fla. – Freshman designated player Jordyn Needle (Abington, Mass./Abington HS) hit a fifth-inning grand slam and drove in a total of five runs to lead the Bentley University softball team to a 7-4 win over Queens University (N.C.) in the first game of the Rollins Round Robin Saturday at Martin Luther King Jr. Park.

Needle also had a hit in the Falcons' second game of the day, a 9-1 six-inning loss to Rollins College, and finished her first two collegiate games with three hits in seven at bats.

With the opener tied at 2-2, Bentley loaded the bases on consecutive singles by junior Lindsey Allen (Worcester, Mass./Worcester Technical HS), senior left fielder Stacey Korotsky (Bridgewater, Mass./Bridgewater-Raynham HS) and sophomore catcher Ella Hillier (Tualitin, Ore./Tualitin HS). Needle cleared the fence and the bases with her grand slam the first by a Bentley player since Maureen DeLuke in 1977.

The Falcons added an insurance run in the sixth when Allen reached on an error and scored on a Needle single.

Both teams had six hits with Needle the only Falcon with more than one.

Sophomore Elise Pereira (Plainville, Mass./King Philip Reg. HS) pitched the first 5.1 innings to gain the win and junior Ashley Keegan (Pittsfield, Mass./Taconic HS) got the final five outs to earn the save.

Bentley scored its only run against Rollins in the third inning. Korotsky drew a leadoff walk and scored on Hillier's double down the left field line.

The 6-0 Tars totaled 13 hits and received two RBI from both freshman shortstop Ashley Troutman (Panama City Beach, Fla.) and sophomore designated player Ashley Worrell (Oviedo, Fla.). They scored twice in the second and third innings, added three in the fourth and closed out the contest with two more runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Freshman righty Ali Shenefield (Brooksville, Fla.) earned the win with six innings of four-hit, nine-strikeout pitching.

The round robin continues Sunday with Bentley facing Queens (N.C.) at 11 am and Rollins at 1 pm.
