Bentley Softball Opens Florida Trip with Losses to Ohio Dominican and Walsh

CLERMONT, Fla. – Facing two teams that already had at least 16 games under their belts, the Bentley University softball team dropped their first two games of the 2016 season Saturday, falling to Ohio Dominion, 3-0, and Walsh University, 9-3, at the National Training Center in Clermont, Fla.

Against Ohio Dominican, freshman Abby Lamping (Cleves, Ohio) blanked the Falcons on three hits, two of those coming off the bat of senior shortstop Alex Borrelli (Salem, N.H./Central Catholic HS).

Lamping also scored the game's first run as she doubled to lead off the second and came home on a single to center by junior designated player Casey Murdoch (Morrow, Ohio).

The Panthers (8-11) added to their lead with two runs in the third inning, capitalizing on three hits and an error.

The second game of the day saw Walsh (7-10) homer three times in the first inning to jump out to a 4-0 lead. All went in the same direction with senior center fielder Anna Anderson (Wadsworth, Ohio), sophomore designated player Danni Murtagh (Dover, Ohio) and junior third baseman Jenna Head (Mantua, Ohio) all clearing the center field fence.

Bentley's first two runs of the new season were scored in the fifth with senior catcher Jill Raia (Montville, N.J./Morristown-Beard School) driving in both with a double to left following singles by junior left fielder Kelsey Kennedy (Bedford, N.H./Bedford HS) and sophomore Stephanie McQuaid (Windham, N.H./Austin Prep HS).

The Falcons' seven hits included two apiece from McQuaid and senior first baseman Morgan Mazone (Selkirk, N.Y./Bethlehem Central HS).

Bentley is back in action Sunday with games against  St. Thomas Aquinas (11 am) and Nova Southeastern (3 pm).
