Merrimack Blanks Bentley 4-0 in Season Finale

WALTHAM, Mass. – A quartet of Merrimack College pitchers, including sophomore starter Haley Currie (Burlington), combined on a four-hitter as the Warriors blanked Bentley University, 4-0, in Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division softball Sunday afternoon. It was the season finale for both clubs.

Three of Merrimack's four runs were scored in the third inning with Currie playing a key role. Back-to-back singles by sophomore infielders Mariah Tenney (Winchendon) and Samantha Waskowitz (Killingworth, Conn.) set the table, both moved into scoring position on a double steal, and Currie brought both home with a single to right. Two pitches later, Currie made it 3-0 when she scored on a double to left by senior center fielder Stephanie Lapierre (Berlin, Conn.).

The Warriors (19-24, 11-10 NE-10 Northeast) added to their lead in the fifth when Tenney singled through the right side, moved from first to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore designated player Kaleigh Finigan (Medford).

Bentley threatened in the second and third but came up empty both times. In the second, with runners on first and third, both were thrown out on an attempted double steal. An inning later, three straight infield singles loaded the bases with two outs but junior Alexis Perry (Westford, Vt.) got out of trouble with a grounder to second.

Currie, in addition to her two RBI and one run scored, pitched two scoreless innings before Perry took over. The Warriors played a total of 21 players in the contest and made 21 lineup changes, including players who re-entered.

Junior right-hander Kelly Ferris (Seymour, Conn./Seymour HS) pitched all seven for Bentley, striking out seven and retiring the final nine batters she faced.

Senior left fielder Shannon Connor (West Haven, Conn./West Haven HS) was hitless in her final career game but led the team in hitting for the fourth straight season. She finished at .337, four points ahead of freshman second baseman Catie Noons (North Dighton/Dighton-Rehoboth Reg. HS), who had a hit and two walks in the final game of her rookie campaign.

Bentley finished the season at 11-19 overall, including 8-13 in Northeast Division games.
