Taitz & Borrelli Lead Bentley to Game 1 Win at New Haven; Chargers Snap Falcons’ Win Streak in Nightcap

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Graduate student Carly Taitz (Blue Point, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point HS) blanked the University of New Haven into the seventh inning and sophomore shortstop Alex Borrelli (Salem, N.H./Central Catholic HS) had three hits as Bentley University ran its winning streak to six with a game one 2-1 win over the Chargers in Northeast-10 Conference non-divisional softball Saturday afternoon at the UNH Softball Field.

New Haven, after being held to one run over the first 11 innings of the twinbill, erupted late in the nightcap for a 10-0 game two victory and a split on the day. The Chargers scored three times in the fifth and ended the contest with a seven-run sixth.

Following five scoreless innings in the opener, the Bentley sixth began with freshman right fielder Chelsea Vena (Matawan, N.J./Saint John Vianney HS) leading off with a walk and grad student Laura McDonough (Braintree, Mass./Braintree HS) reaching on a fielder's choice with no one retired on the play.

Borrelli followed with an RBI double down the left field line. After a strikeout, senior first baseman Samantha Tierney (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham HS) singled in the same direction, bringing in McDonough with Bentley's second run.

That run proved to be important as New Haven sophomore Jen Palase (Staten Island, N.Y.) scored on a two-out wild pitch in the seventh, spoiling Taitz's shutout bid.

Taitz, who had not given up a run in her previous 12 innings of action, scattered eight hits and walked one.

Game two was a scoreless pitching duel between Bentley sophomore Kelly Ferris (Seymour, Conn./Seymour HS) and New Haven sophomore Victoria Cabral (New Britain, Conn.) threw four-and-a-half.

Two Bentley errors helped the Chargers take control in the fifth and the sixth featured a game-ending grand slam by junior first baseman Jess Spivey (Holland, Pa.).

Every spot in the lineup had at least one hit for New Haven, including Palase who was two-for-two out of the seventh slot. The Chargers finished with a 10-3 advantage in hits.

Sunday's doubleheader at Southern Connecticut State was postponed due to field conditions.  The Falcons, 7-5, are next scheduled to play Tuesday at Stonehill College (3 pm).
