Taitz 3-Hitter Helps Bentley Post Game 2 Win and Earn Split at St. Michael’s

COLCHESTER, Vt. – Senior Carly Taitz (Blue Point, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point HS) pitched a three-hitter and five of her teammates scored runs as Bentley University bounced back from a 6-1 game-one loss to take the second half of a Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division softball doubleheader at St. Michael's College, 5-1, at Doc Jacobs Field Saturday afternoon.

Taitz had her bid for a second straight shutout spoiled with an unearned run with two outs in the seventh. She finished with four strikeouts and two walks while earning her sixth win of the spring.

Junior right fielder Chelsea Tamuk (Port Jefferson, N.Y./Earl L. Vandermeulen HS), who had three hits and a sacrifice fly in the twinbill, began a two-out Bentley rally in the second with a single down the left field line. Three wild pitches allowed her to score the Falcons first run, and junior third baseman Kelly Sanborn (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton HS), who had walked, made it 2-0 when she scored on an infield single by sophomore left fielder Shannon Connor (West Haven, Conn./West Haven HS).

It remained 2-0 until the seventh when the Falcons picked up three runs. Tamuk had a sacrifice fly and Tierney followed with a two-run single up the middle.

Bentley (15-26-1, 9-18-1 NE-10, 6-13-1 NE Division) had a total of ten hits in game two, including two apiece by Connor, senior second baseman Laura McDonough (Braintree,  Mass./Braintree HS), junior first baseman Samantha Tierney (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketchum HS) and Sanborn.

In the opener, back-to-back home runs by senior right fielder Brittany Cantore (Wallingford, Conn.) and senior third baseman Carleen McLaughlin (Branford, Conn.) staked the Purple Knights (3-38, 3-25 NE-10, 3-17 Division) to a 4-0 lead.

Bentley's only run was scored in the third. Sanborn had an infield single, took second on an error, took third on a Tamuk single up the middle and scored on a ground out.

Senior Stephanie Frank (Essex, Vt.) pitched a four-hitter to lead St. Michael's.

Bentley, 7-5-1 over its last 13 games, will close out the season Sunday with another doubleheader at St. Michael's. First pitch is scheduled for 12 noon.
