WALTHAM, Mass. – Freshman Halley McDevitt (San Ramon, Calif./San Ramon Valley HS) and sophomore Caitlin Betz (Randolph, N.J./Randolph HS) each pitched a three-hitter as Bentley University posted back-to-back 4-1 wins in a doubleheader sweep of American International College in non-divisional Northeast-10 Conference softball Saturday afternoon.

McDevitt went the distance in the opener, striking out two without issuing a walk, and Betz struck out six and walked four in the nightcap.

With game one tied at 1-1 following the ninth homer of the season by AIC senior designated player Steph Belanger (South Windsor, Conn.), Bentley put up a three-spot in the bottom of the fourth.

Freshman shortstop Alex Borrelli (Salem, N.H./Central Catholic HS) ignited the rally with a lead-off single to left. One out later, senior second baseman Laura McDonough (Braintree/Braintree HS) grounded to third, with the throw to force Borrelli at second sailing into right field. That enabled Borrelli to circle the bases, scoring all the way from first for the go-ahead run.

An RBI single by junior first baseman Samantha Tierney (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketchum HS) made it 3-1 and McDevitt followed with an RBI double off the left field fence to cap the scoring.

Game two was much the same story as Bentley once again broke a 1-1 tie with three runs in the fourth. Following walks to McDonough and McDevitt, junior right fielder Chelsea Tamuk (Port Jefferson, N.Y./Earl L. Vandermeulen HS) lined a triple to right center. An error on the relay enabled Tamuk to complete her trip around the bases, making it a three-run differential.

Bentley had eight hits in the doubleheader, six of those coming in the opener, with Tamuk the only player to have two.

The outcome left both clubs with identical 7-15 records. Bentley is back on its home field tomorrow with a noon doubleheader against Assumption College.
