BRIARCLIFF, N.Y. – Despite a pair of hits in each game from junior third baseman Kelly Sanborn (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton HS), the Bentley University Falcons were swept by Pace University, 7-2 and 2-1, in a  Northeast-10 Conference softball doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Pace Field.

Senior pitcher Chelsea Shea (Babylon, N.Y.) carried Pace to the victory in the opener as she slammed a three-run homer in the second inning and pitched all seven innings from the center circle. She scattered nine hits and stranded seven Falcon base runners on base.

After striking for four in the second, the Setters broke the game open with a three-run fourth, scoring on a single by sophomore first baseman Natalie Gellos (Seattle, Wash.), a sacrifice fly by freshman left fielder Katie Lange (Upland, Calif.) and a double by sophomore catcher Hana Wright (Hillsboro, Ore.).

Junior center fielder Jackie Gauthier (Braintree, Mass./Braintree HS) homered for Bentley to lead off the fourth, and freshman shortstop Alex Borrelli (Salem, N.H./Central Catholic HS) singled and scored in the sixth.

In addition to the two by Sanborn, Bentley's nine hits also included two from junior first baseman Samantha Tierney (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketchum HS).

Bentley (4-10, 0-4 NE-10) scored first in the nightcap with Borrelli leading off the fourth with a walk and moving to second on a Sanborn sacrifice. After a ground out, she made it a 1-0 game midway through when she scored on a wild pitch.

The lead held up until the sixth inning when junior second baseman Lana Buchbinder (San Francisco, Calif.) led off with a single and later scored from second on an error. Gellios followed with a home run to left, putting the Setters (7-4, 2-3 NE-10) up one.

That homer and subsequent loss spoiled a solid pitching effort from Bentley senior Carly Taitz (Blue Point, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point HS), who allowed only four hits with one walk and one strikeout in six innings. She also pitched 2.1 innings of one-hit scoreless relief in the opener.

Pace senior Kelly Fisher (Castle Rock, Colo.) matched Taitz' four-hitter and survived five walks by striking out nine, six of those coming with runners on Pace

Bentley is scheduled to play a doubleheader at Stonehill Wednesday afternoon.
