Adelphi Sweeps Bentley, 7-0 & 6-0, Behind Pitching of Kelly & Watts

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Senior Devon Kelly (Baldwin, N.Y.) pitched a two-hitter in the opener and classmate Laurin Wells (Gardendale, Ala.) did her one better in the nightcap as Adelphi University blanked Bentley University twice, 7-0 and 6-0, in a Northeast-10 Conference softball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Ficke Field.

Freshman shortstop Alex Borrelli (Salem, N.H./Central Catholic HS) had two of Bentley's three hits on the day, an infield single in the first inning of the opener and a single to right in the fourth for the Falcons' only game-two hit.

In the opener, the Panthers had the lead two batters into the bottom of the first. Senior center fielder Emily Dorko (Matamoras, Pa.) led off with a triple to right center and scored on a ground out by senior second baseman Heather Salerno (Staten Island, N.Y.).

Adelphi added to its lead with three runs in the third, two in the fourth and one in the sixth as it totaled 12 hits off two Falcon pitchers.

Dorko and senior shortstop Jeanine Leo (Staten Island, N.Y.) each had three hits for Adelphi in game one, and both Leo and senior catcher Meghan Heiser (Sacramento, Calif.) had two RBI.

The second game also saw Dorko help her team get on the scoreboard in the first inning. She led off with a single, took second on a ground out and scored from second on an error. Two innings later, an RBI double by sophomore third baseman Victoria Wink (Seaford, N.Y.) made it a 2-0 game.

It remained that way until the fifth when Adelphi (13-6, 2-0) broke it open with four runs on five hits, including a two-run single by senior catcher Elizabeth Lindner (Milford, Pa.).

Adelphi's ten hits included two apiece by Dorko, Wink and Lindner.

Kelly struck out 11 and walked three in the opener for Adelphi, and Watts, already 9-1 on the year, finished with eight strikeouts and two walks in game two.

Bentley (4-8, 0-2 NE-10) will remain in New York for a noon doubleheader at Pace University Sunday.
